Faculty Voice Recital Cancelled

The Otterbein College Department of faculty recital of Helen Allen, soprano, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 has been cancelled.

Soprano Karen Eckenroth and Friends to Perform Recital of Music from Germany

The Otterbein College Department of music presents a recital of German music entitled “Abendmusik” by soprano Karen Eckenroth of Westerville (43081), Director of Vocal Activities at Otterbein College, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Grace Lutheran Church, 100 E. Schrock Rd, Westerville. The performance is free and open to the public.

Eckenroth will be joined by guest performers, including clarinetist Lyle Barkhymer of Westerville (43081), violinist Margarette Barkhymer of Westerville (43081), cellist Daniel Clark of Westerville (43081), and organist Linda Hoch. The program will include a performance of Jan Vanhal’s Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 20, No. 5. For more information, call (614) 823-1508.

Otterbein Piano Faculty to Perform “2 x 6” Program of Duo Piano Music

Distinguished members of the Otterbein College piano faculty will perform a recital of duo piano music entitled “2 X 6 Swings American” at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Battelle Fine Arts Center’s Riley Auditorium of the, 170 W. Park St.,Westerville. The recital is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature six performers playing in different combinations on two pianos and has become a regular part of the yearly Music Faculty Recital Series at Otterbein. The compositions to be performed are all by lesser-known American composers of the 20th century. Performing the recital are pianists Dennis Davenport of Westerville (43081), Michael Haberkorn of Westerville (43081), Timothy Huffman of Columbus (43202), Richard Lopez or Columbus (43221), Suzanne Newcomb of Columbus (43221), and Caroline Besana Salido of Blacklick (43004).

The composers and selections include: Rush Hour in Hong Kong by Abram Chasins; Celtic Set by Henry Cowell; South of the Rio Grande by Jacques Miller; Variations on a Greek Folk Song by Charles Spinks; Danza a Media Noche by Dana Suesse; Broadway and 52nd by Francis Thorne; and Sonata for Two Pianos by Esther Williamson Ballou. Four of the faculty will also come together to perform a selection for 2 pianos, 8 hands, the Quodlibeton American Folk Tunes by Ingolf Dahl. Though the composers are American, the compositions have a decidedly international flair. For more information, call 614-823-1508.

QUBE String Quartet to Perform as Artists in Residence at Otterbein College

The Department of Music at Otterbein College will present Artists in Residence QUBE in concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Battelle Fine Arts Center’s Riley Auditorium, 170 W. Park St., Westerville. The performance is free and open to the public.

Now beginning its second season, QUBE is comprised of four Otterbein music faculty members: David Edge or Powell (43065) and Erin Gilliland of Columbus (43212), violin; Steven Wedell of Columbus (43220), viola; and Cora Kuyvenhoven of Columbus (43221), cello. During its first season, QUBE performed at many of the best-known concert series in the Columbus area, including the Bexley Library’s “Tea at Three” concerts, Sundays at Central Presbyterian Church, the Upper Arlington Public Library and “Music in Our Garden” at the Columbus Museum of Art.

The concert at Otterbein College presents a new program for the quartet, including Quartettsatz in c minor by Schubert, String Quartet No. 1 by Shostakovich and the String Quartet in g minor by Debussy. For more information, call 614-823-1508.
