Journalism
This program of study qualifies students to seek careers in the field of journalism, including writing, editing and designing newspapers, magazines, web sites and other publications or to pursue graduate study in journalism/mass communication.
The following are the requirements in the Core Curriculum for a
B.A. degree with a major in Journalism (at least 180 total hours required for the degree):
- Integrative Studies - 50 hours
- Foreign Language - 10 hours
- Mathematics - 5 hours
- Physical Education - 3 hours
- Senior Year Experience - hours depend upon course selected
Requirements in the major (69 hours or equivalent):
- COMM 100 Fundamentals of Public Speaking - 5 hours
- COMM 200 Introduction to Human Communication - 5 hours
- COMM 305 Interpreting Communication Research - 5 hours
- COMM 498 Senior Portfolio - 2 hours
- COMM 499 Communication and Society- 3 hours
- JOUR 160 Media Writing- 5 hours
- JOUR 175 Publication Design - 5 hours
- JOUR 260 News Writing and Reporting - 5 hours
- JOUR 275 News Design for Multi-media - 5 hours
- JOUR 360 Computer-Assisted Reporting - 5 hours
- JOUR 375 Advanced Publication Design - 5 hours
- JOUR 490 Internship - at least 3 hours
- MCOM 410 Media Ethics and Regulation - 5 hours
- JOUR 140/340 --Newspaper Practicum-- minimum of 1
hour of 140 and 1 hour of 340- at least 6 hours
- Electives from JOUR, COMM and MCOM. Majors should also develop in
consultation with the advisor, a concentration in some area outside
of the Department of Communication.- 5 hours
