Programs
Otterbein College's Department of Communication offers the following majors. Please follow the links for more information about each of these programs.
We offer the minors listed below. All class descriptions are available on the Registrar's site. Choose "Course Descriptions" from the menu.
Minor in Broadcasting
Required (at least 25 total hours):
- MCOM 110 - 5 hours
- MCOM 120 - 5 hours
- MCOM 141 - 1 hour
- MCOM 140 - 1 hour
- Remaining hours from among MCOM 130/140/141/320/341/342/343/344/345/
346/347/348/349/360/365/410/450.
No more than 6 hours combined from 140/141/341/342/
343/344/345/346/347/348/349.
- Consult with a broadcast adviser in constructing the minor.
Minor in Journalism Writing
Required (at least 29 total hours):
- JOUR 160 Media Writing - 5 hours
- JOUR 165 On-Line Sources and Design - 5 hours
- JOUR 260 News Writing and Reporting - 5 hours
- JOUR 360 Computer-Assisted Reporting - 5 hours
- MCOM 410 Media Ethics and Regulation - 5 hours
- At least 4 hrs from the following, with at least 1 hour at the 300-level: JOUR 240/340/341/342/343/344/345 Newspaper and Journalism Practicum
Minor in Journalism Publication and On-line Design
Required (at least 29 total hours):
- JOUR 160 Media Writing - 5 hours
- JOUR 165 On-Line Sources and Design - 5 hours
- JOUR 265 Desktop Publishing - 5 hours
- JOUR 365 Advanced Publication Design - 5 hours
- MCOM 410 Media Ethics and Regulation or JOUR 260 News Writing and Reporting - 5 hours

Minor in Public Relations
Required (at least 30 total hours):
- COMM 100 Fundamentals of Public Speaking or 280 Business and Professional Speech - 5 hours
- COMM 215 Principles of Public Relations - 5 hours
- COMM 310 Public Relations Techniques - 5 hours
- COMM 400 Public Relations Case Studies or COMM 415 Public Relations Research, Planning & Strategies - 5 hours
- JOUR 160 Media Writing - 5 hours
- JOUR 260 News Writing and Reporting - 5 hours
Minor in Speech Communication
Required (at least 25 total hours):
- COMM 100 Fundamentals of Public Speaking - 5 hours
- COMM 200 Introduction to Human Communication - 5 hours
- Remaining hours from any other COMM courses with at least 10 hours at 300 level or above
