Speech Communications

This liberal arts program of study prepares the student to pursue graduate study in communication-related disciplines. This program may also prepare students to seek a variety of professional careers including broadcasting, social and human services, and government/politics.

The following are the requirements in the Core Curriculum for a B.A. degree with a major in Speech Communication (at least 180 total hours required for the degree):

  • Integrative Studies - 50 hours
  • Foreign Language - 10 hours
  • Mathematics - 5 hours
  • Physical Education - 3 hours
  • Senior Year Experience - hours depend upon course selected

Requirements in the major (at least 47 hours):

  • COMM 100 Fundamentals of Public Speaking - 5 hours
  • COMM 140 Debate Activities Seminar - 1 hour
  • COMM 141 Individual Events Activities Seminar - 1 hour
  • COMM 200 Introduction to Human Communication - 5 hours
  • COMM 305 Interpreting Communication Research - 5 hours
  • COMM 330 Advanced Public Speaking - 5 hours
  • COMM 360 Argumentation and Advocacy - 5 hours
  • COMM 498 Senior Portfolio - 2 hours
  • COMM 499 Communication and Society - 3 hours
  • Remaining hours from among COMM120/180/291/335/380/391/491
