During
her tenure at Otterbein, Dr. Sylvia Vance rose to the rank of
Professor of French, having served as Chair of Integrative Studies
(1981-87), Administrator of the Faculty Development Program (1983-84),
and Director of Humanities Programs (1984-1990). Dr. Vance taught
a variety of courses in three different departments. In her home
department, she taught language, literature, and history courses.
In the Department of History, she regularly taught European History
1500-1815, Medieval and Renaissance History, and French History.
In the Integrative Studies Program, Dr. Vance taught the Freshman
Seminar ("Utopias"), Freshman Composition and Literature (honors
section), and then experimental Freshman Seminar "Growing up in
America." Although Dr. Vance retired in 1991, her contributions to the
field of French language, literature, and history have not
ceased. In 2005, she published The Memoirs of the Cardinal de Retz (Tübigen: Narr).
