The history program at Otterbein College offers concentrations in American and European history. A non-Western component specializing in Asian history currently is under development. The History Department consists of specialists in the areas of American diplomatic history, women's history, European intellectual history, Russian history, and the history of early capitalist development in Europe.

Students majoring in history at Otterbein College are prepared for fields which employ elements of historical research. Recent graduates have gone on to graduate and law school, government service, as well as teaching careers in secondary education. The Department also has its own chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history majors. Currently there are about fifty students majoring in history at Otterbein College. While at Otterbein they have access to historical records for the State of Ohio, and to internships and job opportunities in a variety of organizations in Columbus, the state capital and a city of over one and a half million people.
