What Students and Alumni are Saying . . .David E. Phillips, '71
"My career has been varied and enjoyable - U.S. Marine Band musician, assistant to the chair of a large university music department, department director at the Baltimore Symphony, and now Director of Corporate Philanthropy at Lockheed Martin and Chair of the Maryland State Arts Council. I couldn't have done it without the skills and values that Integrative Studies teaches. Integrative Studies provides people with tools for problem-solving, especially by giving us better 'total picture' perspectives on our society and its opportunities."
Mark Seese, '64
"In my position as Principal Scientist with Davison Catalysts division of W. R. Grace & Co., my liberal arts training has been very useful. As I my work in the technical field of chemistry, it’s given me a perspective on the complete picture and provided me with skills in oral and written expression that I wouldn’t have had if I’d trained at a technical institution. I notice sometimes that a chemical or engineering colleague, trained exclusively in a technical specialty, isn’t able to use proper or convincing oral or written arguments."
Lacey Speck, '05
"My life is full of questions. That is what I think Otterbein's Integrative Studies classes are for: to find answers. My IS classes get me thinking about the big issues in life, and have given me the opportunity to interact with students outside of my major. I love having the opportunity to read, think and write freely and to explore new topics and ideas. There are plenty of classes to choose from, and I always find myself learning unexpected things about life. What is my purpose? What should I do with my youth? How has the past shaped my future? Lots of questions, lots of answers."
