2D Design

The 2D Design course has two goals. The first is to familiarize art students with the elements and principles of design. This will be accomplished through the application of art theory to specific assigned problems. Students will begin with the study of line, shape and space because it is from these three basic elements that all aspects of design emerge. A student who is sensitive to the power and importance of these three art elements will become a better painter, sculptor, photographer, designer, computer artist, illustrator, printmaker or art teacher.

The second goal is to learn specific ways to think creatively and develop original, innovative ideas. In order to excel as an artist, knowledge of art theory, while valuable, is not enough. Only by using your knowledge of art in unique and imaginative ways can you hope to make an impression in any area of the arts. The assignments will involve specific aspects of design and will teach students new vocabulary and concepts. Some projects will be very narrow in focus, while others will be broad enough to allow for varied and imaginative interpretations. All assignments will culminate in a class critique, providing opportunity to evaluate and discuss the variety of solutions created by class members.

In addition to course assignments, three seminars will provide valuable information on Study Abroad, Internships and Careers in the Arts, and Presentation.
