First Year Foundation Course Sequence
Freshmen enroll in a sequence of three courses during their freshman year: Drawing I, 2D Design and 3D Design. Each course examines specific studio content while also addressing broader themes. The courses are designed with built-in seminar sessions to begin to introduce professional development topics.

The links below give a detailed overview of each class. Class schedules and catalog descriptions are available here.

Sophomore Year and Beyond
After completing the first year foundation courses, students go on to explore studio disciplines and eventually choose a concentration. During the sophomore year, art majors take a foundation sequence of three art history courses which explore painting; architecture; sculpture; learning to identify time periods and to recognize stylistic characteristics of major art movements; and artists from the pre-historic period to modern art. A detailed description of the Art History sequence can be found at the link below.

Students in the Studio Art program eventually choose one or more concentrations in the following areas:

Many students work at internships or study abroad during their junior year.

Seniors enroll in a two-term course that helps them to prepare for their senior exhibitions and life after college. The class provides practical guidance with resume writing, cover letter preparation, and interviewing preparation. In addition, students attend presentations by guest speakers from a variety of arts careers. Other professional artists discuss topics such as documenting artwork, creating portfolios, writing an artist's statement, seeking grant and commission opportunities, free-lance art options, and many other art career topics. All art majors have a senior exhibition in Dunlap Gallery in two and three person shows and present gallery talks during their exhibitions.
