| Join
us for a ten-day adventure (8 nights in Chile) in this dynamic,
spectacularly
beautiful country. We will explore the capital, Santiago, a city of
five million
people and the economic and financial center of this vibrant economy.
We will
travel to Valparaiso, a historic seaport and university center, and to
the
beautiful city of Viña del Mar. We will fly north into the
desert of Atacama,
the home of the largest copper mine in the world. We will examine the
fascinating history and present-day institutions of this dynamic
economy.
Strong relationships with the US and a growing economy make Chile an
especially
important venue for study and travel. |
Academic Program
|
| Lectures
investigates history, culture, and economics, and the participants tour
cultural
landmarks, social institutions, and multinational firms, such as, the
Santiago Stock Exchange and world-renowned vineyards. Participants also
visit the
home of Chilean writer Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize in
Literature,
and learn about trade relations with the US and the region. After
flying north
to Calama, participants tour the famous copper mine of Chuquicamata,
while learning
about the importance of mining to the Chilean economy since the time of
the
Incas. In the high Andean desert, participants will also explore the
Valley of the Moon,
Death Valley, the Atacama salt flats, the thermal geysers of Tatio,
Inca remains at San Pedro de Atacama, and the archeological museum of
Padre Le Paige. Daily lectures will lay the foundation for our
understanding of
economic and social change in this diverse nation. |
| Credit |
| Students
(undergraduate or graduate) may receive elective credit through the
Department
of Business, Accounting and Economics or undergraduate students may
receive
credit through the Department of Foreign Languages. |
Costs
|
| The cost includes tuition;
8 nights hotel, double occupancy (5 nights at the Marriott, Santiago
and 3
nights at the Casa de Don Tomas, San Pedro de Atacama); air
transportation
within Chile (Santiago-Calama, roundtrip); breakfast, some lunches and
dinners;
all cultural tours and lectures. Students will complete a research
project
during spring quarter.
Past seminar
cost for graduate students was $2,299.00. Non-credit attendee cost was
$1,699.00.
Undergraduate costs may vary depending upon spring quarter

Group
airfare of last trip was $938.50 (Columbus-Atlanta-Santiago roundtrip).
Chile
requires payment of $100 tax upon arrival at the Santiago airport, good
for the
duration of your passport. Tips, some meals, incidentals are extra.
