"Many Kinds of Open": Thinking Gender & Sexuality
Wednesday, April 15
Film & Talkback: 20 Straws: Growing up Gay
Time/Location TBA
20 Straws: Growing Up Gay follows the lives of 9 Columbus teenagers as they come into their identities as out, gay youth. Under the guidance of video artist, Liv Gjestvang, these talented young artists share their stories of coming out and staying out in high school.
From Wayne, who mistakenly thought he had AIDS as a little boy; to Denise whose mother forgot her own daughter was a lesbian; to Aris, whose hero is David Bowie, this deeply touching and courageous 25-minute film will grab you with its heartfelt honesty and spirited look at being young, gay and out in high school.

Day of Silence
Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence® has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence® at the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 1,900 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2002, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.
Keynote: Crossing Lines: Identity & the Sexuality Spectrum
Speaker: Robyn Ochs
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Riley Auditorium
How do we assign labels to our complicated and unique experiences? At what point on the sexuality spectrum does heterosexuality turn into bisexuality, and bisexuality into homosexuality? Uses and limitations of the Kinsey scale. Includes discussion of sex/gender, time, and much more. This engaging presentation will transform your thinking!
Workshop: Choosing to Label: What's in a Name
Presenter: Robyn Ochs
1:30-3 p.m. in Towers 112
Bi, lesbian, gay, straight, queer, questioning, choose-not-to-label. How do you decide which label to use? What do labels do? What don't they do? Is it possible to avoid labels? What is the difference between ascribed labels and chosen labels? How can we manage our identities in order to get the maximum benefit with the minimum cost? Let's think creatively and proactively about identity. This is a participatory workshop."
Day of Silence "Speak Out" Rally
Presenters: Robyn Ochs, FreeZone, & the Glbtq Advisory Commission
5-6 p.m. on Towers Lawn (rain location TBA)
Every year, more and more students participate in the Day of Silence, which began 12 years ago when University of Virginia students wanted to find a way to bring attention to anti-GLBTQ, name-calling, bullying, and harassment on campus.
The Day of Silence is about nurturing a culture of belonging, openness, and acceptance. It culminates in a "Speak Out" - a rally that brings participants together to share their experiences. This year, the event will showcase Robyn Ochs (speaker, writer, activist) and the voices of any students, faculty, and staff who take the "open mic."
