Internships and Jobs

internship quoteHere's an important question: What can you do with an English degree? The English Department is committed to preparing students for meaningful work after graduation. The critical and creative writing and thinking skills at the heart of our major are linked to an abundance occupational outcomes.

Internships

The department encourages it's students to take advantage of the internship opportunities Otterbein and the surrounding communities have to offer. English majors have interned at:

  • Prentice-Hall, McGraw Hill Publishers, and other presses, magazines, and companies
  • Hondros Publishing
  • Religion Newswriters
  • America Votes
  • Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association
  • and such places as advertising firms, realtors, small magazines, non-profit organizations, children's book publishers, libraries, and state and local government agencies.

Approximately a third of our majors are preparing to teach in high school. We support a rigorous Integrated Language Arts program for education and work with majors to prepare them for Ohio's Praxis licensure. The English Department at Otterbein ensures that our students are prepared not just in their discipline (English) but in the professional and pedagogical skill needed to become excellent teachers.

Jobs

Every year, we convene a symposia deveoted to the next stage of our majors' lives. Some of them are occasions for the presentation of concrete information about the career search process for English majors. Others involve presentations by alumni who speak about what they have done with their major. Some of our majors have found work:

  • as writers - Suburban News Publications, Ronald McDonald House, Religion Newswriters, Northern Ohio Live magazine
  • as research librarians - Westerville Public Library, Upper Arlington Public Library, Worthington Public Library, Nashville Public Library
  • as editors and publishers - McGraw Hill, Pearson/Prentice Hall, Smith Advisory Group, WCMH TV (NBC 4 in Columbus), Jones and Bartlett Publishing
  • as high school teachers and college professors - Columbus Public Schools, Thomas More College in Kentucky, Jonathan Alder High School, Lorain Community College, Bluffton High School in South Carolina, Heidelberg College, Cochiti Schools in New Mexico
  • in a local or state or the federal government - Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio Department of Taxation
  • in religious institutions - Campus Crusade for Christ, Vineyard Church, Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services
  • in social service agencies - Peace Corps, Institute for Sustainable Communities
  • in the business world - Morgan Stanley, Discover Financial Services, Abercrombie and Fitch, Cardinal Health, Huntington National Bank
  • in public relations and human resources - Great Southern Hotel in Columbus
Many of our graduates have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in library science, English, creative writing, education, children's literature, and more. Recent majors have attended graudate schol at Kent State University, Vanderbilt University, University of Pittsburgh, Ohio University, University of Texas, Indiana University, University of Vermont, and Portland State University.
