Why Learn a Foreign Language?
"Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic society and abroad."
National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, 1999

We offer a curriculum that can provide you with language skills and cultural knowledge for careers in teaching and in a variety of other fields. Our foreign language degree programs feature:

  • Communicative Teaching Methodology
  • Dynamic Faculty
  • Stimulating Learning Environment
  • Learning and Service Opportunities
  • Short-Term/Long-Term Study Abroad
  • Departmental Scholarships
  • Foreign Language Clubs
  • Internships and Post-Study Opportunities

Our Mission
We strive to:

  • Teach communication skills in a language or languages other than the first language.
  • Develop in you an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of cultural systems other than your own.
  • Prepare you for career opportunities in a world increasingly in need of citizens competent in other languages.
  • Assist you in adapting to the multi-ethnic environments and value orientations of others within our own pluralistic society.
This training in skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness is consonant with the liberal arts mission of Otterbein College.
