Endowed Awards
THE WILLIAM O. AND FLORAL E. AMY ENDOWED PRIZE
This endowed prize was created in 2006 by William and Floral Amy. The prize is for any full-time student who has done outstanding work and is majoring in religious studies (Biblical, theological or comparative).
This endowed award was established in 1970 by Lynn and Vera Turner to honor her parents. It is awarded to a graduating senior music major with the highest grade point average.
PHYLLIS WEYGANDT AUERBACH '51 MEMORIAL AWARD
Established in 1993 by family and friends in memory of Phyllis for a senior who plans to enter the human service field after graduate school and has participated as a volunteer in human services during his/her undergraduate years.
J. CLARENCE AND FLOSS G. BAKER AWARD IN MATHEMATICS
In consideration of the bequest by Floss G. Baker and with gifts by the J. Clarence Baker family, Dr. and Mrs. Roy Blackford (Martha J. Baker '42), Mr. and Mrs. John C. Baker (John C. '36 and Jessie Gantz Baker '36), Elaine Baker Barter '59, Jackie Baker Plotz, and Mary K. Baker, this award was established in 1976. The Bakers were in the Class of 1910. This award is in appreciation for the education they received at Otterbein and to encourage young people to achieve academic excellence in mathematics.
THE WALTER LOWRIE BARNES SHORT STORY PRIZE SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed award was established in 1915 by J. Allison Barnes in memory of his father. This award involves a competition between juniors and/or seniors writing short stories about American history and emphasizing citizenship.
THE CHARLES R. BENNETT PRIZE AWARD IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Charles Bennett established this endowed award in 1944. This award is given annually for business administration majors who have shown exceptional efficiency in academic achievement and exceptional research or thesis in the business administration field.
BENUA FOUNDATION AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Benua Foundation established this award for senior psychology or sociology majors who make a significant contribution to their department and show evidence of analytical and integrative skills in communication.
THE CHARLES W. BOTTS '34 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
The Charles W. Botts '34 Memorial Endowed Award was presented for the first time in 1997. The award was provided by family, colleagues, former students and friends to memorialize "Prof." Botts' 28 years as Associate Professor of biology and geology (1940-1968) at Otterbein. The endowed award is available to any full-time student who is a life science major.
THE DR. MICHAEL S. BRIDGMAN PRIZE IN MATHEMATICS
The Dr. Michael S. Bridgman Prize in Mathematics was established in 2006 by Cynthia Bridgman. This award is presented to a student of sophomore or junior standing with a major in mathematics, who holds at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and demonstrates outstanding future potential in the field.
ROY A. BURKHART PRIZE
This endowed award was established in 1978 with a bequest from Hazel Burkhart Campbell, the Class of 1930, to annually award students excelling in English with a preference toward religious poetry.
PAT MIZER CASSADY MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Marshall Cassady '58 established this endowed award in 1978 in memory of his wife Pat Mizer Cassady, also of the Class of 1958. The endowed award is given to a student who has excelled in creative writing.
CLASS OF 1904 GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL SCIENCE ENDOWED AWARD
The Class of 1904, in connection with its 50th Anniversary, established an endowed award to be used each year as an award to an outstanding student in the field of government and political science. Criteria for selection are based on high scholarship, good character and a constructive interest in American government. The premise of this award is to encourage a positive interest in the study of government and political science.
CLASS OF 1944 ENDOWED AWARD
The Class of 1944 proudly established this Class of 1944 Endowed Award for a part-time or full-time junior education major. This gift was designed to help celebrate the class' 50th Class Reunion. Roy '44 and Evelyn Whitney '44 Fisher served as coordinators of the project. This endowed award was presented for the first time at the 2000 Honors Convocation.
THE CLASS OF 1945 ENDOWED AWARD
The Class of 1945 celebrated their 50th Reunion by establishing this endowed award for education majors concentrating on early childhood development. This award was presented for the first time at the 2002 Honors Convocation.
THE CLASS OF 1946 ENDOWED AWARD
The Class of 1946 celebrated their 50th Reunion by establishing this endowed award for an outstanding junior education major. It was awarded for the first time at the 2001 Honors Convocation.
THE WALLACE E. CONARD '54 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established by his wife Dorothy Miles Conard '54, relatives and friends in 2000. Mr. Conard was a lifelong educator who dedicated his life in that pursuit. He taught at both Westerville South High School and Columbus State Community College, touching the lives of thousands of young people. He was very appreciative of his "Otterbein experience." It was awarded for the first time at the 2000 Honors Convocation.
THE OLIVE S. COOK '24 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was created in 2001 from the John B. Cook and Olive S. Cook Foundation. The receipient(s) shall be full-time student who is a music major and/or a music education major, demonstrates exceptional academic progress, and demonstrates a distinct appreciation for the music discipline and has financial need.
THE THOMAS E. COOK '39 MEMORIAL CHORAL MUSIC ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1994 from gifts of family and friends of Thomas E. Cook '39. The award is for part-time or full-time students who are non-music majors and who excelled in choral music ensembles.
THE JAMES O. COX '11 MEMORIAL DEBATE ENDOWED AWARD
This endowment was created in 2002 as an award for "audience-debate" participants in a tournament held on campus during the Integrative Studies Festival. The debate is open to all students using the "Lincoln-Douglas" style of one-on-one debate. Issues involve relevant campus issues and/or current event issues relevant to students. Awards are made to students making the quarter-final round and beyond.
ROBERT E. AND MARY ELIZABETH CRAMER ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1996 by Debby Cramer '71 in memory and to honor her parents.This endowed award is for part-time or full-time student(s) who major in English and who show academic excellence, leadership abilities and commitment to the College community.
DR. H. JAY DATTLE '64 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1992 by family and friends of H. Jay Dattle, Class of 1964. This award is for undergraduate or graduate students majoring in education with a concentration in elementary or secondary education.
THE MARILYN E. DAY ENDOWED AWARD
Established by Joanne Van Sant H'1970 and her uncle, Mr. C. M. Rhodes, in 1990 to honor Dr. Marilyn Day. It is awarded annually for a student majoring in the health and physical education department. Criteria for this award are excellence in scholarship, leadership and service to the department as well as the College. Dr. Day taught health and physical education for 42 years from 1955-1997 and served many years as chairperson of that department.
DICK MEMORIAL PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT TEACHING
The family and friends of Jessie J. Dick, '11, Dr. Marion F. Dick, '43, and Francis Alwilda Dick Cook, '13, established this endowed award in 1967. It is awarded to an education major for excellence in student teaching, especially in mathematics and science.
DR. MARION F. DICK '43 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
His wife, Dr. Beverly Loesch Blakely '43, established this award in 1998. Marion and Beverly met at Otterbein and were married. This award in his memory is for life and earth science majors. Dr. Blakely specialized in internal medicine.
THE EPSILON KAPPA TAU ALUMNAE ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1990 by the Epsilon Kappa Tau Alumnae Association in honor of Dr. Marilyn E. Day for current senior sorority sisters who have achieved proficiency in academics and given extraordinary service to the sorority and to the College.
THE JESSE S. ENGLE '14 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 2000 by Reverend and Mrs. Albert T. Stoddard, Jr. Albert and Alice, nee Walter '49 wished to honor and memorialize Professor Jesse S. Engle, Class of 1914 who was a Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Otterbein from 1923 to 1956. Reverend Stoddard has been a pastor in the United Presbyterian Church and Mrs. Stoddard has been a teacher in the public schools. Reverend Stoddard received the Weinland Chemistry Endowed Award while a student and "now its our turn to help." Prof. Engle's daughter, Mrs. Alberta Engle MacKensie Messmer, Class of 1940, was an Otterbein librarian from 1955 to 1988. Part of that time she served as Library Director as well as the Otterbein Archives Room Director. Another daughter, Mrs. Bonita Engle Burtner, is from the Class of 1933. A son, Robert J. Engle, attended several semesters. This endowed award is for students of any discipline who have shown exceptional academic progress and have excelled in Religion and/or Philosophy classes.
FARNLACHER-HOVERMALE ENDOWED AWARD
The Farnlacher-Hovermale Endowed Award was established in 1999 by Ann Hovermale Farnlacher '45; her son John K. Farnlacher '69; her daughter SuAnn Farnlacher Barlow '71; and friends in loving memory of her husband Karl B. '48, a public school educator; Ann's parents Ulsie P. Hovermale '21, a minister and church executive, Viola T. Hovermale, a minister; and Ann's sister Ruth L. Hovermale '49, an educator and college administrator. This award also seeks to honor Karl and his career as an educator in history, to honor Ann and her career in the medical field, to help the financial need of students studying history, religion, life science, and education, and to recognize the disciplines of all those memorialized.
THE JOHN W. FISHER '71 MEMORIAL SENIOR WRITER'S PROGRAM ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award seeks to honor and memorialize John W. Fisher '71 and his love of the English language. This endowed award was lovingly established in 1999 by his parents, The Reverend Roy and Evelyn Whitney Fisher '44/'44; his sister, Rebecca Fisher Hardcastle '73; his brother and sister-in-law, David W. '75 and Beth Fisher; his sister, Sara C. Fisher; and other family and friends.
LILLIAN FRANK/EARL HASSENPFLUG VISUAL ARTS ENDOWED AWARD
Formerly the Chester R. Turner Family Visual Arts Endowed Scholarship, Chet '43 and Margaret Biehn '43 Turner established this award in 1979 to honor Mrs. Frank H'68 and Mr. Hassenpflug H'91. The award is for a junior or senior visual arts or visual arts in education major on the basis of academic excellence and superior artistic performance.
JAPAN ALUMNI GROUP LILLIAN S. FRANK H'68 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ENDOWED AWARD
Established in 1997, his award honors Lillian S. Frank H'68 and has been funded primarily by alumni from Japan. This award is designed to assist international students who have shown exemplary scholarship and service to the College.
THE THELMA AND ROBERT FRANK ENDOWED AWARD
In 1936, Mrs. Frank wanted to attend Otterbein. She "never was able to do so because of finances." Now, she wishes to help someone else "make it." She and her husband established this award in 1993. It is preferred this award go to a woman of the Christian faith and who is pursuing the teacher, missionary or clergy professions. If no female student is eligible, it is to be awarded to a male student with the same goals.
THE PASQUALE & CONCETTA GIAMMARCO PREMIO ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1997 by Elsa C. Giammarco, Class of 1976 and gifts from family and friends in memory of her father and to honor her mother. It was awarded for the first time at the 2001 Honors Convocation. This award is for part-time and/or full-time foreign language students, with a preference in studying Italian, then a preference in Spanish.
THE DAVID GRAF '72 ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 2001 his wife Kathryn Graf, and their two sons Daniel and Sean, other family members, classmates, professors, and friends in David's memory. David, Class of 1972, was a wonderful and prolific actor. In his 50 short years, he appeared in well over 300 professional productions of stage, film, and television. The most notable performance was his portrayal of Eugene Tackleberry in the Police Academy films. He served as a board member for The Screen Actors' Guild and worked for the betterment of actors everywhere. He was a great man who touched many people with his generous disposition and profound love of life. This award is for a full-time student from theatre senior performance majors in the New York "Showcase" Event.
GRESSMAN-SHULTZ DRAMA AWARD
Established in 1955 by Al Gressman and Phyllis Shultz, this award is presented annually to the outstanding senior student who has made the greatest contribution in the field of theatre arts during the academic year.
"DR. GRISS" SPEECH COMMUNICATION ENDOWED AWARD
Established in May 1994 by family, alumni, students, colleagues and friends, this award honors Dr. James A. "Griss" Grissinger H'75 for his 37 years of faculty service. It is awarded to those who provide exceptional participation in speech communication programs.
THE HAMILTON MERIT AWARD IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
This endowed award was established in 1971 by Miss Nancy Hamilton, Class of 1961. This award is for a sophomore foreign language major for outstanding academic performance in language study.
FRANCES HARRIS MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1961 by the Westerville Women's Music Club, friends and family. This endowed award is for a music major or music education major that has outstanding ability and demonstrated excellence in piano.
EARL C. HASSENPFLUG H'91 ENDOWED AWARD
Created in 1991 by family, friends and students of Mr. Hassenpflug H'91 to honor his 36 years of teaching at Otterbein College. It is presented to an art major that demonstrates exceptional commitment to the discipline of art.
THE CHARLES W. HAYMAN MEMORIAL AWARD
Mrs. Irene Hayman established this endowed award in 1989 in memory of her husband. Mr. Hayman, Class of 1925, had a distinguished career in education. He was an English and history teacher, coach and superintendent during his 41 years in education. This endowed award is for an education major.
THE KAREN NIXON HEABERLIN '68 ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 2000 by Karen's father Corwin M. Nixon to honor her for her devotion to and support of The Humane Association of Warren County, Inc. Mr. Nixon was an Ohio State Representative in the Ohio Assembly for 30 years. It is presented to a junior or senior equine science major.
MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL HINTON ENDOWED AWARD
Dr. John R. Hinton was awarded the 1990 Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference Board of Higher Education's Faculty Excellence Award at the Otterbein Alumni Luncheon, June 9, 1990. With half of the award stipend, Dr. Hinton established this award which goes to a student who demonstrates exceptional commitment to the learning of mathematics, scholastics, relating to students, and living out one's religious faith in the context of an United Methodist church related college community.
MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL MATH-EDUCATION HINTON ENDOWED AWARD
In 1990, Dr. John R. Hinton was awarded the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference Board of Higher Education's Faculty Excellence Award during the Otterbein Alumni Luncheon on June 9, 1990. With half of the award stipend, he established this, a second endowed award for students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the learning of mathematics with the intent to teach mathematics.
THE JOAN NIEWAROSKI JASCHKE MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1991 by her husband, Delmar Jaschke, family, and friends in memory of Joan Niewaroski Jaschke. Joan was an adult degree graduate with the Class of 1985. She was a psychology major with a minor in English and was regarded by her professors as an excellent student whereby she was the 1985 recipient of the coveted Felipe Martinez Humanitarian Award. She passed away on September 26, 1985. Her life and work will become perpetuated as students receive The Joan Niewaroski Jaschke Memorial Endowed Award in years to come. This endowed award is for Continuing Studies students and alternates between English and psychology majors.
ELLEN M. JONES '23 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1996 by Albert '49 and Jane Morrison '50 Horn to honor Ellen M. Jones '23. This award is for music majors who specialize in instruments.
THE STEPHEN KARSKO MEMORIAL
This endowed award was established in 1976 by family, classmates and friends. It is given annually to a psychology major who has a commitment to the total college community, displays openness and curiosity, and who demonstrates definite leadership skills.
THE LAWRENCE KEISTER CLASS OF 1882 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established by Reverend Keister of Scottsdale, PA, in 1969. It originally was in the form of two endowed awards for the study of classical and New Testament Greek. Because classical Greek was no longer in the curriculum in 1982, it was changed to The Lawrence Keister Greek Endowed Award. In 1997, the prize became an endowed award for New Testament studies. Mr. Keister began his study of Greek at Otterbein College and continued his research in that field. "The study of Greek is an excellent discipline in our modern world to increase the power to think, correctly relate ideas, discriminate differences, and note resemblances."
THE JOHN BENJAMIN KESSLER MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
The John Benjamin Kessler Memorial Endowed Award was established in 2003 by Patricia Kessler. It is presented in alternating years to a student majoring in art and English, with excellence in poetry, creative fiction, and ceramics.
FORREST G. AND MAUDE BERRY KETNER SCHOLARSHIPS
Forrest and Maude Ketner, Class of 1910, of Stanberry, Ohio, established this endowed award in 1965. This award is for students participating in public speaking and in debate.
DAVID YONGMIN KIM '58 ENDOWED AWARD
Mr. David Yongmin Kim '58 established this endowed award in 1999. This award is for full-time students Korean students bearing a Korean passport.
THE DONALD "DEAN" KINCAID '88 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
In March of 2000, this endowed award was established in Dean's memory by his father, Norman P. Kincaid, with the help of friends, the Eta Phi Mu fraternity alumni association and other contributors. This endowed award is for mathematical science majors to cultivate leadership and professional potential in mathematical science.
THE PAULETTE ZECHIEL KUNTZ '70 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Established in February 1994, by her husband, John, family, friends, colleagues and students this award was created to remember and honor the life of Paulette, Class of 1970. For over 20 years, she enthusiastically taught French and toured Quebec and France with countless students. The award is for an education major concentrating in French.
JAMES R. LARSON MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1997 by his wife, Jane, and many of his students, friends and colleagues. He taught in the education department from 1988 to 1995. This award is for a continuing studies student(s) returning to pursue licensure in education, and/or a student studying multi-culturalism and/or a person of color.
THE ANDREW LEHIGH '95 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award seeks to honor and memorialize Andrew Lehigh '95 for his love of nursing and helping others. On November 30, 1998 at the age of 28, Andy died as a result of a hunting accident. His friend and classmate, Kecia Brown Gries '95 RN BSN, coordinated this award. Fellow classmates, members of the Otterbein nursing faculty, and family responded so that his spirit can live forever through those who receive this award.
THE LIFE SCIENCE DEPARTMENTAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1984 by Dr. E. Jeanne Willis H'76. It is to be awarded to a life science major who does outstanding original research in botany or microbiology which makes an environmental impact.
THE ALBERT E. LOVEJOY AWARD IN SOCIOLOGY
Established in 1988 by alumni, colleagues and friends who wanted to honor Dr. Lovejoy H'87 on the occasion of his retirement. This endowed award in sociology recognizes the service of Dr. Lovejoy as a member of the Otterbein faculty from 1957-1988. The award was amended by originator Dr. Carol Ventresca '76, in collaboration with Department Chair Dr. Heidi Ballard, in order to capture the excitement and research being done in the Department of Sociology. Awarding this fund now will be accomplished by a selection committee, headed by the chair of the Department of Sociology, and will consider nominees' commitment to public and community leadership, demonstration of a strong global perspective, and exhibition of a strong academic performance.
THE MAFI-TABATABAI ENDOWED AWARD
Professor Shirine L. Mafi, faculty member of the Business, Accounting and Economics Department, established this endowed award in 2000 in memory of her family. It is for a non-traditional junior or senior business, accounting or economic major who has proven academic excellence and whose tuition is not supplemented by an employer.
THE LESLIE BURRELL MANGIA MEMORIAL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARD
Leslie Burrell Mangia, Class of 1974, whose unique life centered on the reality of love for children, music and theatre, majored in elementary education and was completely committed to musical theatre. In consideration of gifts from family, classmates and friends in memory of Leslie, an endowed award was established in 1980 for students who have a demonstrated interest in children and a strong commitment to musical theatre.
HAROLD C. MARTIN MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Gifts from family and friends of Harold C. Martin '33 established this endowed award in 1994. This award is for a senior student whose major field is physical education and who is planning to teach and coach.
FELIPE MARTINEZ HUMANITARIAN AWARD
This award is for seniors majoring in psychology or sociology who display a general humanitarian emphasis both in philosophy and in action, a strong commitment to personal growth and value-education, and an exemplary attitude toward the liberal arts.
THE DOROTHY J. MCVAY ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established in 1993 by Mrs. Dorothy McVay H'88 of Westerville for nursing majors because "They do such worthy work."
THE JAMES V. MILLER AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1971 by students, administrators and friends of James V. Miller in memory of his contributions to the growth and progress of the institution. The endowed recipient(s) shall be of good character and with proven qualities of leadership in extracurricular affairs.
GILBERT E. MILLS AWARD
This endowed award was established by the foreign language department, foreign language students, and royalties from Encyclopedia Films Inc. in 1975. Prof. Mills was on the faculty at Otterbein for literally a lifetime of service. He came to the College campus first as a student at Martin Boehm Academy in 1908 and continued on with college work until his father's death in 1914. Returning after World War I, he graduated in 1920. He became a faculty member the fall following graduation and until his retirement in 1963 taught in the foreign language department, serving as chairman from 1945-63. Several areas of the College outside the classroom felt Prof. Mills' influence. Some students of the '30's and '40's will remember Dr. and Mrs. Mills as head residents of King Hall. For many years he served as secretary of the faculty. This award is for a senior foreign language major.
MYERS FAMILY ENDOWED ENGLISH AWARD
Donald Myers '52, representing the Myers family, established this award in 1999. This award is for a full-time English major who excels in English.
DONALD E. AND MARY A. (WAGNER) MYERS ENDOWED EDUCATION AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1999 by educators Don '52 and Mary '56 in honor and in memory of family members who graduated from the College. They include education majors: (Father) William C. Myers '26 who also attended Kent State University, (Daughter) Cathy A. Hahn '82, (Daughter) Bethia J. Herbruck '84, (Son-in-law) James M. Herbruck '87 who also attended Akron University, (Sister) Martha E. Myers '56 who also attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, (Sister) Betty L. Kennedy '69, and (Aunt) Sarah E Saltz '36 (in memoriam.) They also included (Mother) Catherine I. Darst Myers '26, (Brother) W. Robert Myers '53 who also attended Emory University, (Brother) Arthur H. Wagner, Jr. '58 who also attended G.M.I., and (Niece) Laurie B. Kennedy '96. This award is for a full-time education major who excels in education and is determined by the Chairperson of the Education Department.
THE DR. ELIZABETH DOERSCHUK O'BEAR AWARD
In 1985, this endowed award was established from Rosselot French film royalties, and family and friends of Dr. Elizabeth Doerschuk O'Bear in her memory. She was a member of the Otterbein foreign languages department from 1960 to 1974 and served as chairperson for nine years. Dr. O'Bear is remembered for her effective teaching and leadership and for the many contributions she made to the College. This award shall be given annually to a student in the College who has been an outstanding student of foreign languages.
THE PAULA PETERS ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1965 by family and friends of Paula Peters '59. Miss Peters died eight weeks prior to graduation. It was unanimously decided to award her diploma posthumously. The award shall be given annually to one or more senior women whose major fields of interest are music or sociology who has taken an active part in campus organizations, who is well-liked and respected by both faculty and students, and who shows promise of being of service to others upon graduation.
GEORGE J. PHINNEY ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1992 by friends, family and colleagues to honor 30 years of dedication and service by Dr. Phinney H'89. The Life Science Department present this award to an outstanding student in environmental science.
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY ESSIG-STOBART-ELDRIDGE-BORLAND ALUMNI ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established anonymously in 1999. The Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Association wishes to recognize the "balance" of academic achievement, extra-curricular activity, fraternity leadership and involvement among the current members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. They also wish to honor the college careers which demonstrated that successful blend and balance with the achievements by: Steven R. Stobart '93; W. Michael Stobart '95; Bradley Eldridge '95; and Ryan D. Borland '97. This award is for remarkable members of Pi Kappa Phi (Country Club).
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY GRISE-AUGSPURGER ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established anonymously in 2000. The Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Association wishes to recognize those who demonstrate superior competence in forensics, public speaking and broadcasting - especially those who are involved in Intercollegiate Debate among the current members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. They wish to honor the college careers of Charles D. Yates '11 who began the fraternity's involvement in intercollegiate debate and such noted Pi Kappa Phi intercollegiate debaters as: DeWitt B. Kirk '45; Roy S. Drummond x'48 who passed away at the end of his junior year, The Honorable Alan E. Norris '57, and J. Cabot Rea '78. This award is presented to those who are full-time students who are outstanding and who intend to seek post-graduate training in medicine or dentistry.
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY PROFESSOR HORACE W. TROOP '23 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established anonymously in 1999. The Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Association wishes to recognize achievement and distinction in the fields of accounting, economics, and business administration among the current members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. They also wish to honor the life and career of Professor Horace W. Troop of the Class of 1923. This award is for exceptional members of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity (Country Club) who show disctinction in the fields of accounting, economics, and/or business administration with a preference for accounting.
PI KAPPA PHI "THE LEARNED PROFESSIONS" ALUMNI ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established anonymously in 1999 on behalf of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Alumni Association. The purpose of the award is to memorialize one of the fraternity founders, Harry D. Thompson, and two individuals who followed his example of securing graduate education in a field of one of the arts or sciences-Dr. J. Ruskin Howe '21, a former president of Otterbein, and his son Dr. John R. Howe '57. This award is for impressive members of Pi Kappa Phi (Country Club) who have the objective of entering the professions or medicine, law, or religion and has an outstanding scholastic record.
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY "PERFORMING ARTS" ALUMNI ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established anonymously in 1997 and awarded for the first time in 1998. The Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Association wishes to recognize the "performing arts" participation and excellence among current members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. They also wish to honor the career achievements of Pi Kappa Phi Alumni: Robert E. Holmes '35, Marion C. Chase '47, Lloyd C. Savage '48 and William E. Vaughan '71 who were active in the fields of music, music theatre, theatre, and dance. The award is for members of Pi Kappa Phi (Country Club) who are majoring in music, music theatre, theatre, and/or dance on the basis of excellence in performance and high academic achievement.
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY THOMPSON/HOWE ALUMNI ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established by Cameron H. Allen '47 in 2002. This award is for a full-time student of the College in good academic standing, and an outstanding member of Pi Kappa Phi with the intention of seeking post-graduate training in one of the arts and science disciplines.
PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY YATES-KIRK-DRUMMOND-NORRIS-REA FORENSICS/BROADCASTING ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established anonymously in 1999. The Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Association wishes to memorialize Dr. William B. Grise '11 and honor the Augspurger family: Dr. Harold F. Augspurger '41, Dr. Richard R. Augspurger '69 and Dr. James R. Augspurger '71. Dr. Grise was one of the founding fathers of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. The Augspurger family has three Pi Kappa Phi alumni and displayed uncommon loyalty to the fraternity and to the College. This award is for an active member(s) of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity who has demonstrated superior competence in forensics, public speaking, and/or broadcasting with the first preference to a student(s) involved in Intercollegiate Debate.
THE PIETILA FAMILY EQUINE SCIENCE ENDOWED AWARD
Jack and Mary Jean Barnhard Pietila are Otterbein graduates, Class of 1962 and 1961 respectively. Jack spent 21 years as an Air Force officer retiring in 1983. At that time, he joined the Otterbein development staff. Mary Jean's gift was teaching elementary education. She retired in 1998. The Pietila daughters, Jackie Hassenpflug '89 and Wendy '92 both rode on the Otterbein equestrian team, and it is in their honor that the Pietila Endowed Award is established. This award was established in 2001. The award is for a full-time student(s) who is majoring in equine science and an equestrian participating in either dressage or combined training.
THE H. ROBERT POLLOCK MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1980 by the Pollock family and friends in memory of Mr. Pollock. He was an educator, Professor of Speech at Ashland College, president of the Northern Ohio Forensic Association and a member of several national forensic associations. He coached debate teams to state championships in 1952 and 1953. This endowed award is for junior, or senior student who intends to go to graduate school and teach speech communication on the college level, is active in campus activities, and is active in community activities, or to a Masters student who is preparing to teach speech communication at a secondary level.
THE PRIEST-MILLER ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1985 by the family of Verle A. and Margaret P. Miller. The family wishes to honor the memory of their father, Dr. Verle A. Miller '35, their mother, Margaret Priest Miller '35, and Edna "Mom" Priest, their grandmother who was an Otterbein fraternity "house mom" for 40 years. This endowed award is for either a life science or chemistry major.
THE GEORGE R. RAICA FINE ARTS ENDOWED AWARD
Robert A. Raica '42 and Sylvia B. Raica established this award in 1994 in honor of their son George R. Raica. George attended Otterbein under the mentorship of Prof. Earl Hassenpflug. He later graduated from Heidelberg and earned his Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he earned teaching fellowships in painting and museum studies. This endowed award is given through an open competition of senior year projects.
THE G. HARLAN AND MARY O. HUMMELL '31 RAINIER MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Dr. Beverly Steinfeld of Pittsburgh PA, the Rainier's daughter, established this endowed award in 1994. Mrs. Rainier's middle name is "Otterbein" because her father was attending Otterbein when she was born in 1909. Mrs. Rainier also attended Otterbein and was a member of Tau Epsilon Mu sorority. This endowed award shall be awarded to any African-American part-time or full-time student(s) regularly enrolled in the College who has excelled academically. There is also a preference that the recipient be a member of the Tau Epsilon Mu sorority.
THE MAURICE AND ROSE RAPKIN COMPUTER SCIENCE ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established in January 2001. With Mr. Rapkin's background as a veteran of WWII and a student of mechanical and civil engineering, this San Diego couple established this endowed award to "promote continuing excellence in research and education in the science of engineering particularly as it relates to computer science." Mr. and Mrs. Rapkin's son-in-law, Dr. Duane G. Buck has been a computer science professor at Otterbein from 1991 to the present. The award is presented to an outstanding computer science major or minor part-time and/or full-time student.
THE EUGENE C. REYNOLDS SPEECH/DRAMA AWARD
In 1988, this endowed award was established by friends, colleagues and family of Eugene C. Reynolds, Class of 1949, in his memory. As an Otterbein student, Mr. Reynolds was class president and active in all areas of the speech program, specifically in debate and drama. He had been a speech faculty member at Bowling Green State University and was serving on the faculty at Texas Western University in El Paso at the time of his death in February 1966. This award shall be given annually to a student(s) regularly enrolled in the College who is an outstanding speech communication or theatre/dance major and who best exemplifies the qualities of Eugene Reynolds.
JANET LOUISE ROBERTS AWARD
This award was established in 1983 by family members and friends in memory of Janet Louise Roberts, one of America's most successful and prolific writers of fiction, wrote more than one hundred novels under her own name and the pen names of Janette Radcliffe, Louisa Bronte and Rebecca Danton. She was a 1946 graduate of Otterbein. In 1979, the College awarded her the Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. This endowed award shall be given annually to a full-time junior or senior who has notable leadership in the Quiz and Quill Club and for his/her contribution to creative writing on the campus.
LILLIAN BALE ROOF '42 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
In 1992, this endowed award was established by Lillian's mother Mrs. Florence Taylor and her sister, Mrs. Anna Weber '49. Mrs. Taylor's husband graduated from Otterbein in 1918. Mrs. Taylor passed away in 2001 at the age of 106. This endowed award shall be given to any student(s) demonstrating exceptional commitment in the field of visual arts.
ROSSELOT PRIZE
In 1972, family and friends established this award in memory of Pierre F. and Marguerite M. Rosselot. The award shall be known as the Rosselot Award so that "The Rosselot name will forever ring in the halls of Otterbein." The recipient(s) of this award is to be selected by the History and Political Science Department.
EDWIN L. "DUBBS" AND MARILOU ROUSH THEATRE ENDOWMENT AWARD
HAROLD AND VIRGINIA RUFFING ENDOWED AWARD
Virginia Banta Ruffing '71 and her husband Harold created this award in 2004. It will be presented annually to an outstanding elementary education major.
RUSSELL PRIZE FUND FOR DECLARATION AND ORATORY
Dr. H. H. Russell and Francis Scott McBride established this endowed award in 1927. It is for the winner of any oratory contest held on campus by the Communication Department.
THE ELMER A. R. AND ALICE FLEGAL SCHULTZ '24/'24 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
In 1996, this endowed award was established by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Schultz (Louise Stouffer), both graduates of the Class of 1949, family and friends to honor Arthur's parents who were also graduates of Otterbein. The Reverend Doctor Schultz was a member of the College's Board of Trustees from 1947 to 1968, and he was a long-time secretary of the Board. He received an Honorary Degree from the College in 1944. His wife, Alice, was in the charter class of Epsilon Kappa Tau. This endowed award is for religion or education majors.
THE SELBY FAMILY ENDOWED AWARD
The Selby Family Endowed Award was established in 2007 by Charles and Janet Risch Selby. The award will go to an outstanding student majoring in education who exhibits good scholarship and has financial need, with preference given to a student who is the son or daughter of a United Methodist minister or who is of the United Methodist faith.
SHACKSON MEMORIAL MUSIC EDUCATION ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established in 1998 in memory of Professor L. Lee and Elizabeth Shackson by their family and friends. Professor Shackson was awarded Honorary Alumnus status in 1955. He taught in the music department from 1936 to 1964 and was Chair of that department for many years. This endowed award is for an excellent full-time music education major selected by the Music Department.
K. WILLIAM SHIFFLER '50 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
In 1999, Mrs. Gloria Stauffer Shiffler '50 established this award in memory of her husband, Bill, an avid golfer. He was on the Otterbein golf team for four years and continued his interest in the game following graduation.This endowed award is for freshmen or sophomores who also have an endowed scholarship.
THE SIGMA ALPHA TAU ALUMNAE ENDOWED AWARD
The Sigma Alpha Tau Alumnae Association established this endowed award in 1989 for current sorority sisters who have achieved academic proficiency, service to their sorority, and service to the college. The award shall be presented to a member of the chapter who is a full-time student and based on their service to the sorority, grade point average, and service to the College.
SIGMA DELTA PHI MEMORIAL AWARD
This award was established in 1985, in memory of Darrin Barnett from the Sigma Delta Phi Chapter. The award is given to an active, full-time senior member of Sigma Delta Phi, who shows outstanding service to the fraternity, impressive grade point average, and a great service to Otterbein College.
PAUL G. SMYTHE THEATRE AWARD
In 1986, Marcus Smythe, Class of 1982, established this endowed award in hopes that "I can share some success with my alma mater." Mr. Smythe has achieved notable success in professional theatre and television. This endowed award is for an outstanding junior theatre student who has demonstrated performing talent or back stage efficiency.
ROBERT A. SPENCER, JR. MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BROADCASTING
In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Spencer, Sr. established this endowed award for students who have shown excellence in broadcasting and for meritorious service to the College radio station.
SAMUEL AND IDA ZIMMERMAN SPENCER MEMORIAL ENDOWED STUDY ABROAD AWARD
This endowed award was established by Cameron H. Allen '47 in 1992 to honor his grandparents. Samuel was the Class of 1883, and Ida was in the Class of 1885. This award shall be granted to students studying abroad in order to learn the language spoken there.
FRED J. "POP" THAYER H'82 ENDOWED AWARD
Established in 1993, family, friends, colleagues and students created this award to honor Fred J. "Pop" Thayer H'82 for his 33 years of service in the Theatre Department. This endowed award is for a technical design technology theatre major so that "Pop's" creativity continues in this important area of drama.
THE GARY R. TIREY ENDOWED AWARD IN MUSIC
The Gary R. Tirey Endowed Award in Music was established in 2006 by The Friends of Music at Otterbein College. This award will be given to an outstanding sophomore or junior class standing student who is a non-music major, and who exhibits enthusiasum for, and commitment to, the instrumental music program at the College.
TORCH & KEY AWARD
Established in 1989 by the Torch and Key Society in honor and memory of Dr. Robert Price H'60, Mr. John Becker '50 and Dr. Harold Hancock H'69, and given annually to a junior Torch & Key member with a 3.7+ GPA and a 90+% percentile on the ACT COMP test, and shows leadership in Otterbein activities.
THE ROGER TREMAINE MEMORIAL AWARD
The Roger Tremaine Memorial Award was established in 2005 by The Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA). This award is for exceptional students who major or minor in any of the mathematical sciences, with preference given to students who participate in any capacity in organized sports, either at Otterbein College or outside the auspices of the College, and preference given to students involved in baseball.
LYNN W. TURNER H'58 HISTORY ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1972 by Dr. Lynn and Mrs. Turner (Vera). Dr. Turner was the 19th President of the College. It originally was for the best paper written in history class on any given year. It is now given to a history student for excellence in historical study.
DOROTHY G. VAN SANT MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Established in 1984, this endowed award honors Mrs. Van Sant's interest and creativity in art. Mrs. Van Sant, mother of Joanne Van Sant H'70, served as housemother of Garst Cottage and Clements Hall. This endowed award is given annually to a worthy visual arts major. This award was formerly the Dorothy G. Van Sant Endowed Scholarship.
JOANNE VAN SANT DANCE AWARD
The Joanne Van Sant Dance Award was established in 1989. Joanne Van Sant taught dance, movement in theatre, and served as choreographer for nearly forty musical theatre and children's theatre productions over a period of more than thirty-five years beginning in 1950. She was instrumental in helping with the establishment of a dance minor and ultimately the B.A. degree in Dance at the College. This award shall be given to full-time student(s) enrolled in the College who are majoring in theatre, musical theatre, or dance, with preference to sophomore, junior, and senior statuses.
THE JODY MELICK VAN TINE AWARD
This endowed award was established in memory of Jody Melick VanTine '77 by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Melick, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Melick. A past president of Tau Epsilon Mu sorority, Jody was a second grade teacher in the Granville Exempted Village Schools at the time of her death in March 1985. This award shall be given annually to a student who is an outstanding education major, and who is a member of Tau Epsilon Mu sorority.
DONALD E. AND ELSA GIAMMARCO '76 VAN ZANT, SR. ENDOWED AWARD
The Donald E. and Elsa Giammarco '76 Van Zant, Sr. Endowed award was established in 1999 by Elsa Giammarco Van Zant. This award shall be given to a part-time or full-time student who is majoring in business administration and excels in the concentration of marketing.
THE GLENDINE HUGGINS WADLINGTON '50 MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
Established in 1992 in loving memory by her husband, George "Buddy" Wadlington '50, her family and friends. This award honors Glendine who was a teacher for the "physically challenged." Given to a physically challenged student(s) or to a student(s) who is preparing to teach in the physically challenged field and selected by the Education Department.
DR. JAMES H. WEAVER MEMORIAL MATHEMATICS AWARD
Mrs. James (Mae) Weaver established this endowed award in memory of her husband in 1943. This endowed award is for a junior or senior excelling in all phases of general mathematical activity.
FOSTER AND HILDA WILLIAMS ENDOWED AWARD
The Foster and Hilda Williams Endowed Award was established in 2003 by Myron and Maudy Williams. This award goes to a student majoring in religion and philosophy, and who intends to serve full time in Christian ministry.
LOUISE GLEIM WILLIAMS MEMORIAL ENDOWED AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1989 in Louise's memory by her husband, Donald L. Williams and her daughters, Mrs. Ellen Jankowski and Mrs. Ann Mundhenk. The award goes to the best of all Quiz & Quill first place winners of writing contests and other contests which include poetry, critical essay, personal essay, short story and newspaper works.
THE E. JEANNE WILLIS LIFE SCIENCE ENDOWED AWARD
This award was established in 1992 to honor Dr. E. Jeanne Willis, Professor Emeritus H'76, who taught in the Life Science Department from 1955-91 and who served many years as the chairperson of the department. This award is given to a sophomore or junior life science major that has contributed significantly to the department.
THE ELMER W. "BUD" YOEST '53 ENDOWED AWARD
Established in 1992 by family, friends and colleagues to honor Bud's 36 years as coach and athletic director at Otterbein and expanded in 2000 to include the memory of his wife, Nancy. This award is for students who are exceptionally commited as campus leaders, dedicated to campus citizenship, and are preparing a career in health and physical education.
THE THELMA ZELLNER MEMORIAL CHORAL MUSIC AWARD
This endowed award was established in 1989 by Thelma's friends and family. This endowed award is for students of any major who excel in the choral music activities of the College.
