Scholarships
The following scholarships are awarded from endowed funds.
ALBRIGHT-MCCABE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1987, a bequest from Mary B. McCabe of Greenville, Ohio, established this endowed scholarship in honor of her sister Elizabeth McCabe '21, her grandfather William K. Albright of the Class of 1870, and herself. She established the scholarship because "Otterbein has meant so much to my sister and me over all these years." The scholarship is awarded to eligible full-time students. It was Mary's intent that student recipients strive to assist future students to continue the circle of philanthropy.
MORRIS AND MARJORIE ALLTON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In 1983, Morris '36 and Marjorie Allton established this endowed scholarship with a planned gift. Reverend and Mrs. Albert T. Stoddard (Alice Walters) also made a contribution to activate the scholarship in the school year of 1999-2000. The scholarship is awarded to full-time students who demonstrate scholastic capabilities and achievement without regard for financial need.
ALUMNI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1963, alumni and friends of Otterbein College began a fund in memory of their classmates and friends. To date, hundreds of alumni have contributed to this scholarship. Specific named funds involved in establishing this scholarship are: S. Bailey, S. E. Barlow, D. Brane, E. Courtwright, V. E. Cribbs, A. Demorst, J. Dickson, J. Fisher, H. Goodman, I. Grindell, E. Harris, W. Happy, J. Kilbourne, E. Kintigh, H. Larson, F. Moss, M. Novis, R. Palmer, Phi Theta Phi (Phoenix), J. O. Ranck, N. Roth, C. E. Shawen, T. L. Shoemaker, V. D. Singer, S. Spencer, A. Spessard, B. Struck, Summit County Alumni, D. Walter, Webster-Irmler, A. H. Weitkamp, W. P. Wilson, M. R. Woodland, W. Keck, the Winkler Family; and Classes of 1914, 1918 and 1952. The Alumni Memorial Scholarship is awarded to endowed scholars who have financial need.
HAROLD AND GRACE BURDGE AUGSPURGER FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by Harold Augspurger and his family and friends in memory of Grace (Gracie) Burdge Augspurger '39, "a beloved wife, mother, alumna, patriot, career woman, and community volunteer." This endowed fund will serve as a permanent testament to their belief in an Otterbein education. Endowed Scholars who are full-time students, maintain a 3.0 GPA and participate in at least one non-scholastic activity are eligible for this scholarship.
BALE-HARTMAN SCHOLARSHIP
This fund originally was established by gifts from Ora Bale Hartman and Ila Bale Hayes in memory of family members who have attended Otterbein. It memorializes: Rev. and Mrs. Guy F. Hartman '14 (Ora Bale '07); Rev. and Mrs. Warren H. Hayes '13 (Ila Bale '12); Rev. Milo L. Hartman '12; Fred G. Bale '07; Maybel Gifford Bale '09; Walter S. Bale '15; Wendell Hayes '51 and William G. Bale '50. The fund also honors Mrs. William G. Bale (Evelyn Edward '30); Mr. and Mrs. William F. Bale '57 (Patricia J. Weigand '58); Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Warner '56 (Emily F. Bale '58) and Eric D. Warner '50. The scholarship is awarded to an endowed scholar who is a full-time student.
IRA S. and ADAH GAUT BARNES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1967, relatives established this scholarship as a memorial to Ira S. and Adah Gaut Barnes, Class of 1908. This prominent Westerville area farmer and his wife were devoted to the United Brethren Church, community involvement and to improving the quality of education. This scholarship also honors the family's long association with the College, as over 50 members from five generations have an Otterbein degree. This scholarship is awarded to endowed scholars who are full-time students, with a first preference given to education or pre-med majors.
JAMES V. BARNHARD II MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
J. Vaughn and Margaret Huhn Barnhard established this scholarship in 1984 in memory of their son, James. A local businessman for over 48 years, Vaughn hoped "to serve as an example to other businesses that Otterbein is a sound investment for the future�" The scholarship is for endowed scholars who are full-time students and who display both academic and athletic leadership. First preference is given to a golfer.
BATTELLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Battelle Memorial Institute Foundation provides "half tuition" scholarships for Otterbein students. The trustees of the Foundation established this scholarship in 1976 to encourage and support the development of future leaders in the central Ohio area. To date, over 230 students have received this honor. This sizeable scholarship will be awarded to students from central Ohio who demonstrate high leadership potential.
NE NE BEACHLER SCHOLARSHIP
In consideration of a gift from Mrs. Ne Ne Beheler Beachler '54, this scholarship was established in honor of her children: Connie, Jeff and Jud Beachler, and her parents, Herbert and Evelyn Beheler. The scholarship gives first preference to student athletes, with particular interest in basketball players.
BENUA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship is awarded to endowed scholars who are full-time Juniors or Seniors with superior scholastics and financial need. Once every two years the scholarship will be awarded to Theatre majors per the donor's request.
BIELSTEIN FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
John W. Bielstein '32 established this endowed scholarship in 1992. He felt that speech, communication and the ability to express oneself are extremely important and this scholarship is meant to reward students with proficiency in these areas.
FLORA BELLA BITTINGER SCHOLARSHIP
Upon her death in 1967, Mrs. Flora B. Bittinger bequeathed funds to establish an endowed scholarship for "aiding and assisting worthy Otterbein College students". This scholarship is awarded to endowed scholars needing financial assistance.
NANCY BOCSKOR SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Nancy Bocskor '79 wanted to give something back to the school which gave her her start in life. This scholarship fund, created in 2004, will provide financial assistance to an Otterbein student who is interested in pursuing a political science degree.
BOLIN-TRYON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This scholarship was established in 1975 with gifts from Russell C. and G. Jane Tryon Bolin '42 to "help encourage young people to continue their education." A student's financial need is taken into consideration when awarding the scholarship.
J. NEELY AND ESTELLA BOYER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1954 , by friends and relatives in memory of J. Neely Boyer, Class of 1927, and his wife Estella. Dr. Boyer was a pastor at the Church of the Master in Westerville and professor of sociology at the College. Endowed scholars receiving this need-based scholarship "shall be outstanding in character, scholastic ability, campus citizenship, and shall possess the potential qualifications of leadership."
RICHARD BRADFIELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Richard Bradfield, Class of 1917. A world-renowned agronomist, Dr. Bradfield was co-founder of the "Green Revolution" of the 1950s and 1960s and was influential in the worldwide effort to increase food production. This scholarship is for an upper class student with a farm background who is planning a career related to agricultural or environmental science.
TOM E. BRADY SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by Jean Brady in memory of her husband, Tom E. Brady, Class of 1936. A devoted friend of the College, Mr. Brady was an ardent supporter of instrumental music education in the public schools. Endowed scholars who are music education majors or students of other majors who participate in musical ensembles are given first preference when awarding this scholarship.
HELEN AND EMERSON BRAGG SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. and Mrs. Bragg were generous to the College in many ways, including gifts to establish this endowed scholarship. Dr. Bragg, a member of the Class of 1926 and a former trustee of the College, served as a clergyman for 43 years. Mrs. Bragg was a school teacher for more than 30 years. In awarding this scholarship, first preference will be given to those preparing for the ministry or other areas of religious service.
BREMER FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1995 by Carrie Harris Bremer '39 and her family: Dal '81; Janet '80; Dan '70; Dav '74; and Don '71. The Bremer Family Scholarship will be awarded to any eligible student.
HOWARD R. BRENTLINGER SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship, open to students who demonstrate academic growth, was funded by a gift from the estate of Alice Ressler Brentlinger, Class of 1918, in memory of her late husband, Howard R. Brentlinger, Class of 1918.
JAMES A. AND ANNA BRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1986 by Mr. James A. Bright, Class of 1928, and Mrs. Anna Bright as a tribute to their profession. Together they taught in Ohio schools for a combined total of 78 years. Mr. Bright served several years as president of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. The Bright Scholarship gives first preference to students majoring in chemistry or education.
A. CHARLES BROOKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1984 to honor the memory of A. Charles Brooks, Class of 1950, by gifts from his family and friends. As director of development and construction of the John W. Galbreath & Company, he was instrumental in developing numerous building projects nationwide. Inventive and creative, his vision and strength of character shaped much of the Columbus skyline. Mr. Brooks had great faith in young people and believed they should have the opportunity to pursue a college education. This scholarship recipient will be a person who exemplifies good character and proven leadership.
FORREST B. BRYANT SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Forrest Bryant, Class of 1899, from Brookville, Ohio, was a superintendent of public schools in Ohio. Prior to his death in 1965, he established an endowed scholarship at Otterbein College. First preference in awarding the scholarship is given to a Brookville High School graduate.
BULLIS-KREIDER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
John and Carole Kreider Bullis, both from the Class of 1956, established this endowed scholarship in 1996 to honor their parents, Cleo and John Bullis and Margaret and Russell Kreider. This scholarship gives first preference to broadcast majors in the Communication Department.
CLARICE BURTON MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowment was established in 1976 by the "Burton Boys," Otterbein alumni who resided in Mrs. Burton's home during their student days. The scholarship is a tribute to Mrs. Burton's spiritual guidance, moral support and patient understanding shown to more than 100 Otterbein students during a 30-year period. This scholarship is for pre-ministerial students.
ELLEN JOY BUTCHER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1993 as a tribute to Ellen Joy Butcher with gifts from family, friends and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. First preference is given to members of Sigma Alpha Tau Sorority when awarding this scholarship.
ALICE I. CARTER '39 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established with an estate gift from Alice I. Carter '39 in 1998. This scholarship gives first preference to music majors concentrating in voice.
JOSEPH HANNIBAL CAULKER SCHOLARSHIP
In 1937, the Reverend and Mrs. Samuel R. Seese, Class of 1900, established the Joseph Hannibal Caulker Memorial Scholarship. Joseph Caulker, who was from Sierra Leone, West Africa, died in 1900 while he was a student at Otterbein. The Reverend Seese was a fellow classmate who admired and respected Joseph as "a student of brilliance, and an eloquent and convincing orator." The scholarship is for students preparing for religious work.
WILSON F. CELLAR SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Wilson Cellar, Class of 1902, established this scholarship in 1962. He was the founder and owner of Cellar Lumber, Inc. in Westerville. His daughters, Florence and Helen, continued to support this fund in honor of their father following his death. This scholarship is earmarked for deserving students from the Westerville School District.
CLASS OF 1913 SCHOLARSHIP
Following their 25th anniversary class reunion, the Class of 1913 established this unrestricted scholarship for Otterbein College students.
CLASS OF 1933 SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, part of the reunion gift from the Class of 1933, was established as an unrestricted scholarship by class members.
CLASS OF 1936 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Class of 1936 Endowed Scholarship was established in 1986 with gifts from the class during their 50th year reunion in order to continue and share the joy of being, and having been an Otterbein student. It is unrestricted.
CLASS OF 1943 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Class of 1943 established this scholarship as a way to give back to their college and to acknowledge the faculty and administrators who served them during their years as students. There are no restrictions on the student recipients.
VIDA S. CLEMENTS SCHOLARSHIP
Vida S. Clements, Class of 1901, established this scholarship in 1969. Following her death, the Clements Foundation was organized and her beautiful home was given to the College to serve as the home of Otterbein College's president. The Clements Foundation has contributed generously to the College and to the scholarship program over the years.
WALTER G. CLIPPINGER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 by Francis '31 and Hazel Forwood '34 Bundy to honor and memorialize Reverend Walter G. Clippinger. Rev. Clippinger was the 14th President of the College, serving from 1909 until 1939.
RUTH COGAN SCHOLARSHIP
Ruth Cogan, Class of 1915, taught in the public schools of Canton and won statewide acclaim as a choral director. This scholarship is funded by her bequest. It is awarded to an endowed scholar majoring in voice who provides leadership to the campus and who demonstrates creativity, traits Ms. Cogan sought to develop in her students. Preference is given to students from Canton.
MARK '45 AND HELEN COLDIRON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by Mark Coldiron '45 in 1997 in memory of his wife, Helen. This scholarship gives first preference to students from Westerville Public Schools who are involved with intercollegiate athletics.
DR. AND MRS. A. D. COOK SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. and Mrs. A. D. Cook, Classes of 1912 and 1913, established this scholarship in 1963 to help deserving students. The name "Cook" is best known by generations of Otterbein College students who lived in the Cook House which once stood where Courtright Memorial Library now is located.
COPELAND-BREWBAKER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Rev. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Copeland in 1992. Ben was the Class of 1932 and Virginia (Brewbaker) was the Class of 1930. Virginia is the sister-in-law of the 14th President of the College, J. Ruskin Howe '26. This endowed scholarship is unrestricted.
THE DR. LYNN CORBIN AND CAROL CORBIN WILCOX ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Robert and Edith Peters Corbin, both class of 1949, wanted to honor their two daughters with this endowed scholarship. Both Dr. Lynn Corbin '75 and Corbin Wilcox '79 pursued careers involving music. The scholarship will be awarded in alternate years to students majoring in music education and musical theatre.
DR. AND MRS. N. E. CORNETET SCHOLARSHIP
Wendell and Elizabeth Cornetet and Grace Cornetet Mackey established this scholarship in 1984 as a memorial to Grace and Wendell's parents, Noah and Nannie Holladay Cornetet. Noah, an inspiring scholar, served the College from 1902 until 1931, and Nannie, a strong supporter of education, was a tireless worker who raised five children, all of whom earned college degrees. The scholarship is a tribute to their work and spirit.
JOHN K. COULTER HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. John Coulter is remembered by members of the Otterbein family as a "master educator". Family and friends established this scholarship in 1985 in his memory. Dr. Coulter taught English from 1957 until 1984 and was named an Honorary Alumnus in 1977. This scholarship is for a student with financial need who shows leadership in the humanities.
A. JEAN COURTRIGHT-BLAIR MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP AND LIBRARY FUND
The estate of A. Jean Courtright-Blair established this endowed scholarship and Library Fund in 2000. This scholarship will be provided from 2001 through 2011 at which time the earnings will revert to the Library Fund. The scholarship is need-based and gives first preference to English or Journalism majors.
FERN AND LOIS COY SCHOLARSHIP
Lois Coy '24 and her sister, Fern '23, established this scholarship in 1986 to assist students majoring in nursing or home economics. Fern Coy directed the nursing education program at Indiana University and for many years was a public school nurse in Noblesville, Indiana. Lois Coy taught English and home economics in Indianapolis.
PAUL G. CRAIG '50 AND MARGARET ASHWORTH CRAIG '49 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Margaret A. Craig '49 in 1993 in her name and in memory of her husband Paul G. Craig '50. This need-based scholarship gives first preference to Business Administration majors.
THE JOHN W. CURL AND FLORENCE D. CURL ENDOWMENT FUND
This fund was established by a bequest from Mrs. Curl for the nursing department. Mrs. Curl had a friend that attended Otterbein College and graduated with a degree in nursing.
MARILYN E. DAY SCHOLARSHIP
Gifts sent to the College in honor of Marilyn E. Day '53 were used to create this scholarship which annually will be awarded to students majoring in physical education or sports education, and who have financial need. Dr. Day taught health and physical education for 42 years from 1955-1997 and served for many years as chairperson of that department.
DELLINGER-CARLSON SCHOLARSHIP
Otterbein College was a significant and pervasive force in the lives of Dr. Ben '22 and Edna Dellinger '22 Carlson. They appreciated the dedicated professors, cherished their Otterbein friendships and highly valued what Otterbein stands for. Their family has honored their memory with an endowed scholarship, created in 1988, that enables others to benefit from the unique educational experience Otterbein College offers. Therefore, those honored in addition to Ben and Edna Carlson are: Ilo Sage Dellinger '22, Lillian Carlson '23, Edmund Patrick Carlson '42, Ann Carlson Brown '52, and Dr. Mary Cay Carlson Wells '47, a professor of education at Otterbein from 1980 to 1993.
DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Since 1852 when President Lewis Davis brought the first piano to Westerville and the College, music has been a part of the Otterbein College curriculum. Many persons have contributed to the creation of this scholarship, which is awarded annually to endowed scholars enrolled in the department of music. Gifts to this scholarship were also given to honor Rev. W. I. Underwood, Tressa Barton and R.O. Clymer.
RICHARD A. '53 AND MARY HATMAKER DILGARD '55 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In 2005 and in memory of Lillian Frank, Richard Dilgard has established this scholarship through a charitable gift annuity to assist promising students who are preparing to enter into a teaching career in fine arts or music.
KATHLEEN WHITE DIMKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1969 by Mr. T. E. Dimke and friends in honor of Kathleen White Dimke, Class of 1924. These gifts were given in appreciation of Kathleen's interest in encouraging talented young people to continue their education at Otterbein. This need-based scholarship gives preference to students majoring in English or Science.
RONALD AND CAROLE STOVER DOUGHERTY SCHOLARSHIP
As part of her Golden Reunion Legacy gift, Carole S. Dougherty '54 created this scholarship in honor of her parents, Harold D. and Mary G. Stover.
ROWLAND P. DOWNING ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1967 with an estate gift from Rowland P. Downing, Class of 1908, in memory of his parents, Henry and Anna John Johnson, and his brother, Shelley S. Downing. The scholarship is unrestricted.
GEORGE H'91 AND GLADYS H'93 DUNLAP MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This unrestricted scholarship was established in 1998 with an estate gift from Gladys Dunlap H'93 of more than $1 million. Mr. Dunlap, the first CEO of Nationwide Insurance, was a long-standing Trustee and greatly admired. He became an Honorary Alumnus in 1991.
B. JOAN DURR SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was created in 2005 with an estate gift from B. Joan Durr '58, and is intended for students pursuing a degree in musical theatre.
THE RICHARD E. DURST SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Richard E. Durst scholarship was established in 2003 with a gift from Katherine Miles Durst in memory of her husband Richard E. Durst, who graduated from Otterbein College in 1929. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the Dean of Chemical Engineering or Chemistry. The recipient shall maintain a 3.0 GPA.
EAST OHIO CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP
As a United Methodist-related institution, Otterbein College counts among its friends many members of the church. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is a member of a United Methodist Church in the East Ohio Conference. It is made possible by gifts from several churches and church-related individuals. Funds given to this scholarship also honor Arthur Moore, Rev. and Mrs. J. S. Kendall, Mrs. Martha Soule and Ephraim Hartman.
MARIE D. ERVEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1985 with an estate gift from Miss Marie D. Erven. First preference is to be given to female students with financial need who major in the social sciences.
FINDEISS SCHOLARSHIP
In 1943, the Findeiss family, including William, Max, Margaret '11 and Rose, established this unrestricted scholarship for Otterbein College students. First preference is given to students from Zanesville, Ohio, who demonstrate financial need.
ROBERT E. FOSTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Elta L. Foster in 1985 in memory of her husband, Robert E. Foster. Mr. Foster, Class of 1929, always supported the Otterbein ideal although he was unable to complete his own degree program. Through this scholarship, his family wishes to help ensure that worthy students have the opportunity to fulfill their destinies.
CHARLES L. AND LAYNE R. FOX SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Charles Fox established this need-based scholarship in 1970 for Otterbein College students from Springfield, Ohio. Mr. Fox, Class of 1920, retired as superintendent of the Springfield School System and had a keen interest in helping students receive an Otterbein education.
CAROL F. FRANK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was bequeathed to Otterbein College in 1988 for scholars who are involved in organ, piano and/or voice studies in the Otterbein Music Department. It stems from Mrs. Frank's wish to "keep the world hearing good sounds."
LAWRENCE S. AND CAROL F. FRANK SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1981 in recognition of two devoted Otterbein friends, Lawrence and Carol Frank; both became honorary alumni in 1972. Lawrence's teaching and example in the Department of Music from 1948-1972 was an inspiration to his students. Carol was one of the founders of the Otterbein Thrift Shop. The award is designated for music majors.
WILBUR R. FRANKLIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Wilbur R. Franklin, Class of 1923, established this scholarship in 1977 for endowed scholars involved in intercollegiate athletics who have financial need and leadership ability. Mr. Franklin was an athlete, coach, teacher and principal.
FRANK-MICHAEL-HENRY MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In consideration of gifts from Mrs. Clifford (Eleanor) Henry and family in 1993, Otterbein College established an endowed scholarship in memory of her parents Herman E. Michael '19 and Myrna Frank Michael Rowe '22, her uncle Omar H. Frank '17, and her grandfather Dr. W. T. Frank. This scholarship gives first preference to music majors or those preparing for Christian ministry.
FRAVERT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Fravert of Dayton, Ohio, were United Methodist laypersons who desired to help deserving students with their educational costs at Otterbein College. They established this unrestricted scholarship in 1969.
GARFIELD H. AND CLARA D. FRITSCHE MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Ernest G. Fritsche '38 established this endowed scholarship in 1986 in memory of his father and mother, who were dedicated to education. Mrs. Fritsche pursued a teaching career and Mr. Fritsche, as president of the Westerville Board of Education, was able to present a high school diploma to each of their five children. The scholarship recipient should be employed outside of Otterbein in order to help pay for college expenses. This scholarship is for Business Administration or Education majors and/or students with U.S. military or Peace Corps service experience.
GAR FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP (I,II, III)
The GAR Foundation, a private, grant-making foundation established in 1967 in Akron, is supporting three scholarship funds at Otterbein College. One of the GAR scholarships is intended for students from Appalachia, one for students from Summit County and one is unrestricted.
ELSA C. GIAMMARCO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Elsa C. Giammarco '76 dedicated her career to government and public service at the community, county, and state levels. She exemplified the values of leadership, loyalty and respect of family. This scholarship was created in her memory in 2004 by her husband, Timothy Snipes, and with the generous support of friends, family and colleagues.
PATTY L. GIBSON MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 2002 by a bequest gift from Patty L. Gibson, a friend of the College. This scholarship is for an education major who plans to teach in Ohio.
DR. CLARENCE GILHAM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Dr. Clarence Gilham was a friend of the College. His bequest left funding to establish this scholarship, which will be used to help students preparing to enter the Christian ministry or who are planning to pursue graduate studies in History or Biblical studies.
MARGARET B. GILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1980 by William E. Gill, this scholarship is a memorial to Margaret B. Gill, who taught in Otterbein's home economics department from 1962 to 1973. This scholarship is for students with financial need who exemplify the academic excellence, professional leadership and creativity, which Mrs. Gill sought to develop in her students.
GLOVER, HOHN, MOORE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The cousins of Margaret Moore Glover '33 - Richard Hohn '63, Roger Hohn '66 and Thomas Moore - in 2004 helped to fulfill her dream of creating a scholarship that would assist upper-class Otterbein students. Mrs. Glover believed that Otterbein had given her a tremendous start in life, and wanted to afford the same opportunity to others.

The Dorothy Goeglein Endowed Scholarship was established with an estate gift in 1997. There are no restrictions with this scholarship.
RITA ZIMMERMAN GORSUCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by friends and relatives of Rita Zimmerman Gorsuch, Class of 1961, who died in June 1973. Mrs. Gorsuch "gave without reserve and with devotion to her alma mater", as a student and an alumna. There are no restrictions to this scholarship.

This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 with a bequest from Ernestine W. Griswold, Class of 1927. It is for students with financial need.
HAROLD B. HANCOCK H'69 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In consideration of gifts from family, friends, alumni and colleagues who loved and respected him, Otterbein College agreed in 1991 to establish an endowed scholarship in the name of Harold B. Hancock H'69. The recipient is to be a History or Political Science major.
BERTHA LAMBERT HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1986 by Dr. Daniel A. Harris, Class of 1923, in memory of his mother, Bertha Lambert Harris, Class of 1926. Mrs. Harris resumed her studies at Otterbein later in life taking classes alongside two of her sons. By the time she graduated she was already a grandmother. First preference will be given to students concentrating on English literature, music or a career in the ministry.
REVEREND JOSEPH H. HARRIS MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This unrestricted endowed scholarship was established in 1993 by Daniel Harris '23 in memory of his father. Mr. Harris died one week after his gift to the College was received. He was happy to provide scholarship support in honor of both his father and mother.
THE RACHAEL HARRIS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEATRE
The Rachael Harris Scholarship for Theatre was created in 2008 by Rachael Harris '90. This scholarship will be awarded to an Otterbein student majoring in theatre or musical theatre.
BYRON E. AND PAULINE B. HARTER SCHOLARSHIP
In 1983, Byron E. and Pauline B. Harter established a scholarship in memory of their mothers: Della Toohey Harter Byers (1891-1980) and Nellie Little Bryan (1870-1959). Byron is a graduate of the Class of 1934. His wife worked for the College, and they were married one week after his graduation.
HARRIET L. HAYS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was created in 1988 by a significant gift bequeathed to Otterbein College by Harriet L. Hays, Class of 1922. Miss Hays taught science for 44 years and said, "I got my start to a very satisfying career at Otterbein". This scholarship is intended for students majoring in the sciences.
HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP
Alumni and friends of the College have contributed to this scholarship. It is awarded to students planning a career in the health sciences. Recipients may be enrolled in an undergraduate health sciences program or a pre-professional curriculum. Gifts to this scholarship were also given to honor: Sherman Bilsing, Charles W. Botts, Elmer Schultz and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Weinland.
THE FRANCES HENRY HEINISCH '53 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Frances Henry Heinisch endowed scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Frances Henry Heinisch, an honors student from the Class of 1953, by her husband James Heinisch '53, Sara Heinisch Salmers, Becky Heinisch Ducharme, Lynn Heinisch, Lisa Heinisch Turney, Wayne and Hazel Heinisch and Margaret B. Heinisch. Fran was the first college graduate in her family. Fran and Jim attended another institution, got married after their freshman year, and came to Otterbein in their junior year. Both worked their way through school with the help of academic scholarships and both graduated with honors. This scholarship is available to any full time student who is a first generation attendee, has financial need and who demonstrates potential.
VIRGIL O. AND CHARLOTTE H. HINTON SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Hinton of Canton, Ohio established this scholarship in 1969 to aid United Methodist students from the Akron/Canton area who are athletes. Mr. Hinton, Class of 1934, was a lifetime honorary member of the Otterbein College Board of Trustees. The Hintons wished that "in some way this gift may serve as a measure of return for the assistance given Virgil by the College during the depression years of the early 1930's which he has never forgotten."
J. GORDON HOWARD '22 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Louis and Florence (Howard) Norris, both of the Class of 1928, established this unrestricted endowed scholarship in 1997 in memory of and to honor the 16th President of the College. Reverend Howard was president from 1945 until 1957, and then become an Evangelical United Brethren Bishop.
J. RUSKIN '21 AND MARY ELIZABETH HOWE '24 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1990 by family and friends. Dr. Howe was the 14th President of Otterbein serving from 1935 to 1945. In 1965, Mrs. Howe (Betsy) was named Otterbein's "Woman of the Year". This scholarship is for full-time students committed to service for others within Christian ministry.
GLANNA IMAR SCHOLARSHIP
Joseph A. Imar, Class of 1932, provided this endowed scholarship in 1991, in memory of his wife, Glanna Ramsey Imar who died in 1977. This scholarship is for full-time students majoring in elementary education.
INTERCOLLEGIATE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund was formed in approximately 1975 by the grouping of a number of bequests from friends of the College who were interested in encouraging participation in intercollegiate athletics. Recipients must show good academic standing and demonstrate leadership as a member of an Otterbein College sports team. Individual funds within this scholarship are "Deke" Edler, Ewing-Miller, Gary E. Moore, and the "O" Club.
BONITA JAMISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Miss Bonita Jamison, Class of 1914, established this unrestricted scholarship with a bequest in 1985. Miss Jamison was a teacher and educator with the Grandview and Lima, Ohio schools.
ALLEN C. JENNINGS '51 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In 1991, the Allen C. Jennings Scholarship was established in his memory by his wife Martha Ann Jennings '57. This endowed scholarship is given with preference to pre-ministerial students from the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.
WILLIAM M. JUNK AND FRANCES SMITH JUNK SCHOLARSHIP
In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. William Junk established this scholarship to be given to an endowed scholar who is a full-time student with financial need and scholastic aptitude. Mr. Junk was an attorney in Washington Court House, Ohio. "Our college education provided the start for our lives and has served us well."

This endowed scholarship was established in 1994 by Ralph C. Kelly, whose wife Margaret was a member of the Class of 1927. This scholarship is for full-time students who major in science or mathematics.
EDITH G. KERN AND EDMUND S. KERN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1976 through the Will of Mr. Kern to encourage students with financial need to continue their education. Mrs. Kern (Edith Gilbert), Class of 1912, was a family member of more than three generations who received an Otterbein College diploma. This scholarship has no restrictions.
DONNA L. KERR SCHOLARSHIP
In 1982, The Westerville Otterbein Women's Club established this scholarship in honor of Donna L. Kerr, named the Club's Woman of the Year that same year. Mrs. Kerr, wife of former Otterbein President Thomas J. Kerr IV, was recognized on the 60th anniversary of the Club for her outstanding service to the College, her profession, and to the Westerville community. This scholarship is available to any full-time student in good academic standing.
THOMAS J. KERR IV SCHOLARSHIP
At the initiative of the Alumni Council of the College in 1985, alumni, friends and colleagues established this scholarship in honor of Dr. Thomas J. Kerr IV. Dr. Kerr served as Otterbein's 18th President from 1971 to 1984, after teaching eight years in the Department of History and Political Science. The scholarship is awarded to any full-time student and recognizes Dr. Kerr's many contributions to all areas of campus life and development, and his outstanding commitment to the Otterbein mission of providing students a quality liberal arts education.
KING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1984 with a gift from the Will of Zella B. King. The scholarship is for endowed scholars from the East Ohio Conference, the West Ohio Conference or the Western PA Conference of the United Methodist Church and/or a foreign student.
KINTIGH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
In 2004 in honor of his parents, Thomas Q. '62 and Judith Eckner Kintigh '65 created this scholarship to help students from western Pennsylvania to attend Otterbein.
KLINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Kline Memorial Scholarship was established in 1958 in memory of William A. Kline, Class of 1916, and his wife Blanche Everall Kline, a 1907 graduate of the Otterbein College Academy. To be eligible for the scholarship the recipient shall show progress toward earning a degree at Otterbein.
AUSTIN E. KNOWLTON SCHOLARSHIP
Created in 2005, this scholarship honors the memory of Austin E. Knowlton, a friend of the College. Funding will help provide support for students from Delaware County who attend Otterbein.

Created in 2005 by Fredrick A. Ashbaugh '53 to honor his daughter, Kathy Ashbaugh Kohmescher '79, this scholarship is intended for students majoring in education.
RUTH M. KOONTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1973 in memory of Ruth M. Koontz, Class of 1915, as stipulated in her Will. Its purpose is to assist deserving scholars who have financial need. She was received financial assistance to attend college and said, "Now it is my turn to offer that same assistance."
FRED J. AND ANN P. KULL MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This unrestricted endowed scholarship was established with a bequest from Mr. and Mrs. Kull in 1994. Fred was a member of the Class of 1928 and remembers his time at Otterbein as "Some of the best years of my life. We want to share that memory."
KARL W. KUMLER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In 1970, family, friends and colleagues of Karl W. Kumler established this scholarship in appreciation of his interest in, and commitment to, Otterbein College. His primary athletic interest was in basketball. This scholarship is available to any full-time student with a preference to those student athletes interested in collegiate basketball.
REVEREND C. W. KURTZ 1892 AND CLARENCE BOOTH '17 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1982 by Stella Kurtz Booth, Class of 1918, in memory of her father, the Reverend C. W. Kurtz, Class of 1892, and her husband, Clarence L. Booth, Class of 1917, a public school administrator. It is in recognition of the significance of an Otterbein education for these two men and in their life's work. Preference for this scholarship is for pre-ministerial students of any denomination.
KUSSE/RITCHIE SCHOLARSHIP
In 2004, Lily L. Ritchie established this fund in honor of her parents, Paul and Brigetta Kusse; her husband, George C. Ritchie; and her daughter, Brenda, who attended Otterbein for two years. Her son Ronald Ritchie graduated from Otterbein in 1961 - the first person from their family to graduate from college. This scholarship is dedicated to ensuring that worthy men and women who lack the financial resources to attend college have a chance to "make it" in the modern world.
CHARLES R. AND FERNE P. LAYTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Charles R. Layton, Class of 1913, and his wife, Ferne Parsons Layton, Class of 1915, established this scholarship in 1982 to be awarded to "an endowed scholar who is pursuing or will pursue a major in the department of speech or to one engaging in major intercollegiate forensic activity at Otterbein College."
HELEN AND HERMAN F. LEHMAN SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Herman Lehman, Class of 1922, retired as general manager of the Frigidaire Division of General Motors in Dayton, Ohio. A College trustee from 1960-1975, he became an honorary trustee in 1975. Mr. Lehman also served on the executive committee of the Development Board. The scholarship was established by his colleagues from the Frigidaire organization in appreciation of his leadership, and is to be awarded to a Business Administration or science major.

Jennifer M. Linker, Class of 1985, passed away unexpectedly a few weeks prior to graduation. Jenni was an outstanding young woman of many talents. Her family's desire to honor her resulted in this scholarship that is awarded to an outstanding senior woman who is an endowed scholar and full-time student that has exhibited strong Christian commitment, leadership and a potential for making a significant contribution to the future. Jennifer Linker's professors, classmates and friends contributed to this scholarship, which was created in 1986.
R. FRANKLIN AND MARJORIE LOHR SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Lohr established this scholarship in 1979 with a preference for students from Africa. If no students meet this criteria, the scholarship is then open to any full-time student enrolled in the College.
THE LEONA LONGANBACH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Leona Longanbach was an Otterbein parent (daughter, Thelma Zellner '56 is deceased) who thought highly of the College and its educational program. She was awarded an honorary degree in 1994. She created this scholarship with an estate gift in 2003 to benefit students interested in pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing.
MAXINE FRENCH LOOMIS '36 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 by Maxine French Loomis '36 who "valued her years at Otterbein which opened the world to her." She was very appreciative of the scholarship she received and, in turn, wants to help today's students.

This endowed scholarship was established in 1987 by S. Clark Lord '39, Donna Love Lord '39, and Mary C. Lord '45. This endowed scholarship is to honor the Lord family, and is for endowed scholars who are full-time students majoring in science or language.

Claudine Love, a friend of Otterbein College and a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Piqua, Ohio, established this scholarship in 1956. It is available to endowed scholars who are enrolled full-time at the College.
THE MAJIDZADEH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
As friends of the College, Farah B. and Kamran Majidzadeh wanted to help students of exceptional ability succeed. This fund, created in 2005 to help provide enhancement funding for tuition expenses, will be granted by committee to a female minority student who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities.
WALTER A. MARING SCHOLARSHIP
Upon his death in 1959, Mr. Walter A. Maring, Class of 1917, bequeathed to Otterbein College funds to endow a scholarship for deserving students. Mr. Maring was owner of an oil company in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. This scholarship is available to endowed scholars who are full-time students at Otterbein.
DR. STEPHEN C. AND MARY B. MARKLEY SCHOLARSHIP
In 1944, Mary B. Mauger Markley established this scholarship in memory of her husband. Both Dr. and Mrs. Markley were members of the Class of 1895. It was their desire to aid Otterbein College in maintaining and conducting an institution of learning. Preference for this scholarship is for endowed scholars who are enrolled full-time at the College.

This scholarship was established in 1944 by Ida Mauger Bovey, Class of 1896. It was her desire that others could share in the Otterbein College experience. The scholarship is named for Mrs. Bovey's parents and is available to endowed scholars who are full-time students at Otterbein.

Mauger, Class of 1895. Preference for this scholarship is that it be made available to endowed scholars who are worthy and needy students.

In consideration of gifts from relatives and friends of the late Albert C. May, Otterbein College established in 1983 the Albert C. and Frances C. May Scholarship. Their daughter, Jo Ann May, Class of 1952, has contributed to this scholarship as well. This scholarship is awarded with preference for education majors.

The Majidzadeh Family Scholarship was created by Farah B. and Kamran Majidzadeh to assist a junior or senior student planning to graduate with a degree in Business, Accounting and Economics.
CHARLES R. MCFARLAND '49 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR SCIENCE
In 1998, Lois McFarland established this endowed scholarship in memory of her husband, a microbiologist. This scholarship is for students majoring in life science. "When he went to Otterbein, he was poor. He received scholarships while at Otterbein. We want to help someone who is facing financial difficulty today and hope they, in turn, will help someone when they are able to do so."
HOWARD E. MENKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Nellis Menke Niswonger, Class of 1926, the sister of Howard, established a scholarship in 1983 for an endowed scholar who is a full-time student majoring in mathematics. Howard Menke, Class of 1924, assistant professor of mathematics at Otterbein College from 1925 until 1933, also taught at The Ohio State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Heidelberg College.
KATHLEEN O'BRIEN MESSMER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
In 1990, this endowed scholarship was established by Charles C. Messmer '40 in memory of his wife, Kathleen. The scholarship is for an endowed scholar who is a full-time student majoring in English, with a concentration in creative writing.
MICHAEL-LEMAY SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. William E. LeMay '48 and his wife, Helen Hilt LeMay '47, established in 1969 this scholarship in honor of Dr. Lyle J. Michael's distinguished service as a chemistry professor from 1937 until 1964. Dr. Michael was a member of the Class of 1919. William LeMay, a trustee, and his wife want to encourage students at Otterbein to complete their education. There is a preference for this scholarship to be awarded to science or mathematics majors.
MILLARD J. AND EMMELINE S. MILLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. and Mrs. Miller established this endowed scholarship in 1993. Dr. Miller was the pastor of the campus United Brethren/Evangelical United Brethren Church for years and was named an Honorary Alumnus in 1959. This endowed scholarship is for dependents of United Methodist clergy.

This endowed scholarship was established in 2001 from the estate of Carolyn C. Miller, a friend of the College. It is for full-time students who play intercollegiate football.
GLADYS B. MITCHELL '32 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1996 with a bequest from Ms. Mitchell. It has no restrictions and was the 150th endowed scholarship established for the College.
THE THOMAS C. MORRISON SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN GOVERNMENT SERVICES
This fund, to be created with a bequest gift, is intended to prepare Otterbein students of strong moral character and high academic achievement for a career in (federal) government service. This scholarship is expected to provide full tuition funding for each of four years while attending Otterbein, and funding for a semester at a college or university located in Washington, D.C., so that the student may observe first-hand the workings of our government.
ROBERT T. MYERS '31 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 from the estate of Robert T. Myers '31. Robert was an undergraduate math major and received an electrical engineering degree from The Ohio State University in 1933. He was a life-long Westerville resident and loyal supporter of Otterbein. He worked in the business office for many years and had much to do with the growth of the College in the 1980s. This endowed scholarship is for full-time students majoring in math.
EDWARD NAGEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Class of 1934 created this unrestricted endowed scholarship in memory of their classmate, Edward J. Nagel. This scholarship was established as a tribute to Rev. Nagel's life and personal sacrifices. This is available to any full-time student at Otterbein.
NATIONAL CITY BANK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 to acknowledge the strong and enduring connection between the bank and the College. Preference is for endowed scholars who are Business Administration majors.
THE NATIONWIDE FOUNDATION GEORGE H. DUNLAP SCHOLARSHP FUND
A generous grant from The Nationwide Foundation, created this endowed scholarship. Each year, students pursuing a business administration or social science major will receive scholarship support. This fund was named in honor of George H. Dunlap, past Chairman of the Nationwide Corporation and served 15 years as president of the Otterbein College Board of Trustees. Mr. Dunlap received an honorary degree from Otterbein in 1991.

Former parents, Roger and Betty Neff have created The Roger H. and Betty A. Neff Endowed Scholarship. This endowed fund will provide scholarship assistance for students interested international studies or a study that reflects a global perspective.
CLOVIS AND NELLIE NISWONGER SCHOLARSHIP
Nellie Menke '26 came to Otterbein College in 1906. She met and later married Clovis Niswonger, Class of 1909. This scholarship was established in 1964 for Otterbein students of good character and with proven qualities of leadership.
NORRIS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Norris Scholarship Fund, endowed in 1970 by members and friends of a family long loyal to Otterbein, is awarded to students pursuing history, government, speech or mathematics. Mr. J. Russell Norris '24 married Dorothy Schrader '31. He was a Westerville retailer for more than 50 years and employed scores of Otterbein students. The Honorable Alan E. Norris, Class of 1957, taught business law at Otterbein as adjunct faculty, served in the Ohio State Legislature and Ohio Appeals Court before being appointed as Judge to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals by then President Ronald Reagan. Alan's wife Nancy, Class of 1961, died in 1986. She was employed by the public relations department and taught public relations as well as speech as an adjunct faculty member at Otterbein. Alan and Nancy are Otterbein's only husband and wife to both serve as president of the Alumni Council. David G. Norris, Class of 1961, was employed in international trade, which placed him in England; and James Norris married Pat Noble, Class of 1955.

This scholarship was established in 1976 by Mrs. Warren Ernsberger (Patricia Orndorff), Class of 1943, in memory of her parents Clell Fullar and Wilhelmina Bookman Orndorff; and her aunts and uncles E. L. and Theo Haines and Mildred Haines Wood. Patricia's parents, aunts and uncles were very active members of the Westerville community as are Warren and Patricia today. Recipients alternate between endowed scholars who are music or drama majors and football or basketball players who are enrolled as full-time students.

The Edward S. Peake Scholarship was established in 1966 through Mr. Peake's estate to assist endowed scholars who are enrolled full-time and participate in intercollegiate athletics. Mr. Peake was manager of the Kilgore Manufacturing Company in Westerville for many years. When the Kilgore Company merged with another company, many Kilgore holdings were given to Otterbein College.
J. C. PENNEY SCHOLARSHIP
The J. C. Penney Scholarship represents the company's Franklin County employees' continued dedication to the ideals that motivated James Cash Penney when he founded the company in 1902. Eligible recipients are endowed scholars enrolled as full-time students in the College and major in economics.
STUART W. AND GRACE SENFF '30 PHILLIPS MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 through Mrs. Grace Senff Phillips' estate. The scholarship is for music majors so that "the sounds of music keep ringing everywhere."
FRANCIS MARION POTTENGER SCHOLARSHIP
The 1968 estate of Caroline Pottenger provided for a scholarship in memory of her husband, Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Class of 1892. Dr. Pottenger was an authority on the diseases of the chest and is credited with discovering a cure for tuberculosis. He is a member of the Otterbein College Hall of Fame. The endowment is available to all enrolled full-time students.
ROGER K. POWELL SCHOLARSHIP
Mrs. Emerson Miller of Newark, Ohio, a close friend of the College, established this scholarship in Mr. Powell's memory. Mr. Powell, Class of 1922, was a College trustee and a tax attorney. The scholarship is for a student from Licking County, Ohio.
PRESIDENTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1982, alumni, friends and faculty created this scholarship in memory of the following former Otterbein College presidents: J. Gordon Howard (1945-57); Royal F. Martin (1945); and Walter G. Clippinger (1909-1939). The scholarship honors the dedication and love for Otterbein College that each of these men demonstrated through his years of service. The endowed scholarship is available to endowed scholars who are full-time students showing progress toward earning a degree.
DR. ROBERT PRICE MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1991 by John W. Bielstein '32 in Dr. Price's memory. Dr. Robert Price was a highly-regarded professor and chair of the English department. The scholarship is for English majors with an interest in speech.
GEORGE W. AND C. ALICE PRINGLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The George W. and C. Alice Pringle Memorial Scholarship was established in 1966 by their daughter, Eva, Class of 1923, in memory of her parents. First preference is designated for an Otterbein College endowed scholar who is a full-time student from the West Virginia United Methodist Conference with an interest in pursing a career in the ministry.
REVEREND HEZEKIAH L. AND NELLIE A. PYLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Reverend Pyle was a member of the class of 1894. His wife Nellie Adams Pyle, was a member of the class of 1893. They served a number of churches in the Midwest and settled in Westerville upon their retirement. This unrestricted endowed scholarship was established in 1967 through Mrs. Pyle's estate and is for any endowed scholar who is a full-time student at Otterbein.
RAICA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1986 by Robert A. Raica, Class of 1942, and his wife Sylvia. Bob was an accomplished Otterbein athlete in basketball and tennis. Bob met Sylvia in a Nashville hospital while recovering from a wound received in World War II. The couple owned and operated retail establishments in Westerville including the old "Johnny Dew" drug store. This scholarship is for an endowed scholar participating in tennis or basketball.
VIRGIL L. RAVER '29 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1963, the Otterbein Student Education Association established The Virgil L. Raver Award in recognition of Mr. Raver's service to the College's teacher education program. The award was given at each subsequent Honors Convocation until 1987. In September 1988, his wife, Lucy, converted the award to an endowed scholarship intended for an endowed scholar who is a full-time student at Junior or Senior ranking, and who is majoring in education. Mr. Raver, Class of 1929, held various positions on the faculty and administrative staffs at Otterbein, including associate professor of education, director of student teaching, director of teacher placement, associate registrar, director of placement and registrar.
PEARLE MAE REDMOND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Charles Redmond, a Columbus attorney and active layman in the United Methodist Church, established a scholarship in memory of his wife Pearle May Redmond. The scholarship is designated for African American United Methodist full-time students who are endowed scholars and from East Side High Schools in Columbus. Other preferences for this scholarship include science, mathematics, or non-humanities majors.
RESSLER FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1927 by Lillian Resler Harford, Class of 1872, and Professor Edwin D. Resler, Class of 1891. It serves as a memorial to their parents, Emily Shupe Resler and Jacob Resler. Recipients are to have a high financial need. (Note: Family legally changed spelling of last name in 1931.)
RICHER BROTHERS SCHOLARSHIP
Benjamin F. Richer, Class of 1911, and Harry E. Richer, Class of 1914, were both ministers in the United Methodist Church who gave distinguished service to the church, community and College. Gifts from Benjamin F. and Edith Hahn Richer, Class of 1919, and from the estate of Mrs. Harry E. Richer (Ethel Shupe), Class of 1914, established the scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student who is an endowed scholar and intends to become a United Methodist minister or enter a service-oriented profession.
RIKE FAMILY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Rike family has a long and exciting history with Otterbein College. Mr. D. L. Rike was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1884 until 1895. His son, Fred, was a member from 1893 until 1946 and an honorary trustee until his death. Susan Rike was a professor in the music department in the 1890s. Fred Rike's son David, through the Rike Family Foundation, was a major benefactor for the Rike Physical Education Recreation Center and the Rike Memorial Scholarship. The family established this endowed scholarship in 1981 to help endowed scholars who are full-time students with financial need.
JANET LOUISE ROBERTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Gifts by family members and friends established the Janet Louise Roberts Memorial Scholarship in 1983. Janet Louise Roberts, Class of 1946, was one of America's most successful and prolific writers of fiction. She wrote more than 100 novels under her own name and the pen names of Janette Radcliff, Louisa Bronte and Rebecca Danton. She was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humanities in 1979. This scholarship is for English majors.
LEONARD P. ROBERTS SCHOLARSHIP
Leonard P. Roberts was an active member of the Otterbein College Board of Trustees from 1976 until 1984. Shortly after his death in 1984, his mother Mrs. Louise E. Roberts established this scholarship in his memory. The scholarship is awarded to endowed scholars who are full-time students and show promise in leadership, human service and business. This scholarship is for Business Administration majors.
ROSSELOT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Alzo Pierre Rosselot, Class of 1905, began his Otterbein education in 1898. After graduating, he joined the Otterbein faculty and had 68 years of proud affiliation with Otterbein. The Rosselot Family Scholarship is in memory and in honor of the following family members: Pierre Frederick and Marguerite Rosselot; Dr. Alzo Pierre Rosselot, Class of 1905 and Eathel Young Rosselot; Dr. Gerald Alzo Rosselot, Class of 1929, and Gladys Dickey Rosselot, Class of 1929; and Dr. Eathel LaVelle Rosselot, Class of 1933. This scholarship was established by the family in 1922 to award full-time students majoring in history, political science, science, language or education.
LAVELLE ROSSELOT SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. LaVelle Rosselot, Class of 1933, a member of the Otterbein College foreign language faculty from 1946-1970, developed a film series for teaching French that was widely distributed by Encyclopedia Britannica Films. A portion of the royalties from the films has been set aside by the Board of Trustees to endow a scholarship for which endowed scholars who are full-time students with foreign language majors shall be given preference.
ROUSH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Edwin L. Roush, Class of 1947, established this scholarship in honor of the Roush family in 1985. A successful Westerville businessman, Dr. Roush has been broadly involved in the College including many years as a member of the Board of Trustees, service as chairman of the board, and providing the naming gift for Roush Hall. Dr. and Mrs. Roush (Marilou Harold, Class of 1945) have five children: Wendy Roush Elliott, Class of 1971; Larry, Class of 1976; Cynthia Roush Corcoran, Class of 1980; and Susan Roush Fagan. The scholarship is for any endowed scholar enrolled as a full-time student at the College.
AMES A. AND KATHLEEN C. RUTHERFORD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford of New Albany, Ohio established this endowed scholarship in 1996. The scholarship is for freshmen endowed scholars who are first generation college students, have financial need, and have demonstrated leadership potential. Mr. Rutherford is the founder of Goal Systems International, Inc. and Country Sport, Inc. in New Albany. They gave the scholarship through their fund at The Columbus Foundation.
SCANLAND-RAMSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Janet Scanland Ramsey, Class of 1942, and her husband Richard L. Ramsey established this scholarship in 1984 in memory of their parents: Frank and Luella Scanland and George and Mary Ramsey. This scholarship is available to any full-time endowed scholar student enrolled in the College.
E. W. E. SCHEAR SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1967 for students majoring in biology with a gift from his nephew Rillmond Schear, Class of 1920. Dr. E. W. E. Schear, Class of 1907, was a professor of biology and geology at Otterbein College from 1912 until 1951, then served as emeritus professor until his death in 1971.
SEARLES-JENNINGS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1987 by Mrs. Helen Boyer Jennings '43 in honor of her husband Raymond L. Jennings '43 and her sister-in-law Lola Dell Jennings Searles '37. This scholarship was established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lola's graduation from Otterbein and the 45th anniversary of Raymond's graduation. When possible the scholarship shall be given to an endowed scholar who is a full-time student, a graduate of the Big Walnut School District and is majoring in education. If no such student is eligible, it shall go to any endowed scholar majoring in education.
GLEN C. SHAFFER AND ZELMA SHAUCK SHAFFER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of the Reverend Glen C. Shaffer, a 1932 graduate of Otterbein and his wife, Zelma Shauck Shaffer, a 1934 graduate of Otterbein. This scholarship was established through the generous gifts from family and friends and is intended for a full-time endowed scholar who is preparing for the ministry.
SHAWEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Shawen in 1998 in their memory and the memory of Martha Jane Shawen Allaman '30 (Robert's sister), Charles Edwin Shawen '30 (Robert's brother), and Dr. Charles E. and Agnes B. Shawen (Robert's parents). The recipient of the scholarship is an endowed scholar who was in the top 15% of their freshman class; it is preferred that they maintain a GPA of at least 2.75 while at Otterbein.
ROBERT M. AND ELSIE BENNERT SHORT '33/'35 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship for endowed scholars who are full-time students majoring in secondary education was established in 1987 by family and friends of Robert M. Short, Class of 1933. Mr. Short had a heartfelt interest in his church, volunteer work, and Otterbein activities, and he assisted with beautification projects in the city of Westerville. His wife Elsie Bennert Short is a graduate of the Class of 1935 and was a very active volunteer of the Westerville-Otterbein Women's Club Thrift Shop and the Manor Care Convalescent Center in Westerville.
DAVID R. AND MARYBELLE S. SIMMONS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. Simmons. Mrs. Simmons worked for 23 years in the alumni and business offices. Both she and her husband are ardent athletic boosters. This endowed scholarship is established to honor their children, Elizabeth S. Wolfe and Robert S. Simmons whose respective interests are art and business. The scholarship is for endowed scholars who are full-time students majoring in art or business.
DONNA AND GENE SITTON SCHOLARSHIP
Donna Sniff Sitton '55 and her husband E. Eugene Sitton, recipient of an honorary degree in 1973, established this scholarship in 1998. Their preference for this scholarship is that it be awarded to a full-time endowed scholar who has a strong academic performance and participates on the men's basketball program.
FRANCES MCCOWEN SMITH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Frances McCowen Smith '28 was a talented musician, and at one point played with the Wheeling Junior Symphony Orchestra. This scholarship was established in 2003 with a bequest from her estate, and is to benefit a musically talented, and needy, student each year.
JOHN FRANKLIN SMITH SCHOLARSHIP
Friends and former students of John F. Smith, Class of 1910, established this scholarship in memory of the former Speech Department Professor who chaired the Department from 1927 until 1950. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time endowed scholar with a major in speech, who maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher.
SPORCK FAMILY HEALTH SCIENCE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mrs. Howard (Edna Burdge) Sporck '34 established this endowed scholarship in 1993. The scholarship is for full-time students planning a career in medicine, dentistry, nursing or any other health science.
PAUL V. AND EVELYN JUDY SPROUT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sprout established this endowed scholarship in 1982 for full-time students from the Dayton, Ohio area, involved in athletic competition and in the top half of their class.
THE L. WILLIAM STECK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Using a gift from a life insurance policy from Richard L.'50 and Shirley A. Whitehead '49, a scholarship was created in 1987 in memory of L. William Steck '37. Mr. Steck was a source of inspiration to many students during the 1940s. Both as a professor at Otterbein and in his personal life, he exemplified the leadership qualities which are so important in our society. Endowed scholars who exhibit outstanding leadership qualities are selected for this scholarship.
LAWRENCE STEBLETON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Lt. Col. Lawrence Stebleton '53 loves music. He came to Otterbein to pursue that love. He still sings today in a rich tenor. Larry created this scholarship in 2004 in the hope that other tenors also would be able to pursue their dreams of a performing career.
THE STECK FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was created in memory of Charles E. and Alma Boose Steck and their son L. William Steck, Class of 1937. William established this scholarship after his father's death in 1966. A professor of history and political science at Otterbein from 1940-42 and 1947-1952, he served on the College's Board of Trustees from 1945-75 and was an honorary trustee from 1978 until his death in June of 1982. The Steck family members who are Otterbein alumni are: Sara Kesler Steck, Class of 1937; Don E. Steck, Class of 1952; C. Gary Steck, Class of 1960; Fredrick K. Steck, Class of 1969; Katrina A. Steck Mescher, Class of 1972; and Gretchen E. Steck Horstman, Class of 1973. This endowed scholarship is for endowed scholars who are political science majors.

This endowed scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Ramsey in 1965. The scholarship is for full-time students preparing for ministry.

Miss Mary B. Thomas, Class of 1928, honorary Doctor of Humanities in 1981, trustee of the College from 1960 until 1979, and lifetime honorary trustee, established this scholarship in 1982 in memory of her parents. This unrestricted endowed scholarship represents one of numerous gifts to the College in her lifetime and through her estate.
THE DANIEL C. THOMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This was created in 2005 as a tribute to Dan Thompson '78 by his wife, Professor Susan E. Thompson, PhD. The scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior who has overcome considerable odds to obtain a college education, and has financial need.
GARNET THOMPSON '11 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This unrestricted endowed scholarship was established in 1993 from Miss Thompson's estate. Miss Thompson held the distinct honor as Otterbein's oldest alumni from 1991 until her death. She was also a member of Otterbein's first women's basketball team.
DR. ROY H. TURLEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Shirley Turley wanted a special tribute for her husband, Dr. Roy H. Turley H'77, so in 2004 she established this scholarship. Dr. Turley served Otterbein from 1959 to 1977, first in the Chemistry Department and later as Academic Dean and Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
PRESIDENT LYNN W. TURNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1985 through gifts made in memory of President Lynn W. Turner, who was Otterbein's President from 1958 until 1971, then served as president emeritus until his death in 1982. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time endowed scholar who is a history or humanities major.
SYLVIA WARREN TURNER SCHOLARSHIP
Family members and friends established this fund in 1985 in honor of Miss Sylvia Warren Turner, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lynn W. Turner who passed away in 1974. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in music with preference to a student majoring in applied strings or voice.
VERA A. TURNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mrs. Vera A. Turner H'58 established this endowed scholarship in 1986. Mrs. Turner's husband, Dr. Lynn W. Turner, was the 17th President of Otterbein College, serving from 1958 until 1971. While at Otterbein, she was state president of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. The endowed scholarship is for full-time endowed scholars majoring in music education.
GLYNN AND SUSAN TURQUAND SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Glynn Turquand '54, created this scholarship legacy to commemorate his recent 50th graduation anniversary. Funds will be used to assist students pursuing a degree in elementary education.

In 2005, Don '55 and Dorothy Unger established this scholarship in order to assist student planning to graduate from Otterbein with a degree in business.

FLOYD J. VANCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Floyd J. Vance, Class of 1916, served Otterbein as a professor and registrar, and then was appointed acting president of Otterbein College in 1957. He remained in that office for the 1957-58 school year.
SYLVIA PHILLIPS AND WAID VANCE '47 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established anonymously in 1992 to honor Sylvia and Wade's many contributions to Otterbein. Both are from the Class of 1947: Sylvia Phillips Vance taught for 30 years at the College; and Waid Vance has served as president of the Otterbein Alumni Association (1980-81). Recipients shall be endowed scholars who are full-time students and majoring in foreign language or history, with preference to participants in the Otterbein Honors Program.
BLANCHE KENT VERBECK MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Blanche Kent Verbeck, a former member of the faculty at Otterbein, established this scholarship in 1987 because of her life-long interest in children and youth, and her desire to encourage students to major in elementary education. Mrs. Verbeck taught courses in children's literature and was supervisor of practice teaching at Otterbein.
ROBERT K. VERBECK MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1986 by Mrs. Blanche Verbeck in memory of her husband Robert K. Verbeck. Mr. Verbeck was a professional entertainer. He used his love of the theatre and his interest in young people to encourage them to continue their education. The Verbecks want this endowed scholarship to do the same. This scholarship is for endowed scholars who are full-time students majoring in theatre, music or education.
RICHARD WAGNER/MELDA MEYERS WAGNER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Mr. Richard D. Wagner, Otterbein College trustee and member of the Class of 1941, established this scholarship in 1986 in honor of his mother, Melda Meyers Wagner, in 1986. The scholarship honors Mrs. Wagner's long association with the College and her interest in fine arts. Her three sons went to Otterbein. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding full-time endowed scholar majoring in fine arts, with a preference that they be from Western Pennsylvania.
ROBERT E. WAITES '41 MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 from Dr. Waites' estate for biology majors. This scholarship is for any full-time enrolled student majoring in biological sciences. Dr. Waites, class of 1941, was a member of the gymnastics team and Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
JAMES E. '29 AND ELIZABETH P. WALTER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Walters established this endowed scholarship in 1986. James, Class of 1929, was also the President of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Elizabeth Walter was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College. This scholarship is awarded to full-time endowed scholars who are preparing for the ministry and/or international students.
EDGAR L. WEINLAND MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Edgar L. Weinland Memorial Scholarship was established through his estate and with gifts from friends and relatives in 1991. The scholarship is for endowed scholars who have a GPA of at least 2.5. Edgar L. Weinland, Class of 1891, was secretary of the Otterbein College Board of Trustees for 57 years.

The West Ohio Conference Scholarship, awarded annually to an endowed scholar who is a member of a United Methodist Church in the West Ohio Conference, is made possible by gifts from several churches and church-related individuals. Specific funds involved with this scholarship are: S. C. Conrad, James H. Fennessey, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Rudisell and Cora F. Scott.
WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1982 with gifts from several churches in the Western Pennsylvania Conference. The scholarship is awarded to full-time endowed scholars who are members of a church in the Western Pennsylvania Conference. Specific funds involved with this scholarship are: First United Methodist Church of Altoona, Pennsylvania; Park Avenue United Methodist Church of Johnstown, Pennsylvania; Mr. Huber, Mr. Wagner, and the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Foundation.
WESTERVILLE OTTERBEIN WOMEN'S CLUB SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established in 1984 by the Westerville Otterbein Women's Club in appreciation of all volunteers who contribute their service to the Club's activities. The scholarship award is made to full-time endowed scholars who show good academic and leadership ability. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA and leadership potential to receive this scholarship.
WESTERVILLE OTTERBEIN WOMEN'S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1968 by the Westerville Otterbein Women's Club, the scholarship preference is for full-time endowed scholars graduating from Westerville high schools in the upper third of their class. The Westerville Otterbein Women's Club operates the Thrift Shop on West Park Street to raise money for the scholarship and other projects.
WHITNEY/TURNER MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This fund was established in 1990 through a bequest from Judith E. Whitney, to provide a scholarship for endowed scholars who are for Spanish, life science, chemistry or math majors. This scholarship is in memory of and is intended to honor the following: Rev. and Mrs. Charles Whitney, Otterbein College Solicitor, 1888; Dr. and Mrs. William Curtis Whitney; William C. Whitney, Class of 1895; Edith Turner Whitney, Class of 1895; Eleanor Whitney, Class of 1922; and Judith E. Whitney, Class of 1927.
THE WIDDOES, MILLER, METZGER FAMILIES SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Doris Widdoes Miller Metzger was a faithful friend of Otterbein College and its Basketball program. This fund was established by Raymond E. Miller '51 in her memory and that of the Rev. Howard H'26 (doctorate of divinity) and Alice Widdoes, who were missionaries for the Evangelical United Brethren Church in the Philippines from 1903 through 1945. YANTIS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
In 1984, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Yantis established this scholarship in honor of family members who have been associated with the Westerville community and Otterbein College. Both Dr. and Mrs. Yantis have served the College community for many years. He was a mathematical science faculty member from 1977 until 1997. She is a past president of the Westerville Otterbein Women's Club. The scholarship is designated for full-time male students who are endowed scholars and interested in sports, with outstanding academic achievement.
YOTHERS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Duane '55 and Diane Yothers sought a means to assist students with their Otterbein education. In 2005, they created a scholarship to do this.
ROBERT ZECH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In 1986, family, classmates and friends established this scholarship in memory of Robert Zech '63. Robert, who died at a young age, was an outstanding Peace Corps volunteer, the grandson of Professor and Mrs. John F. Smith, and son of Rev. Harry and Edna Smith '33 Zech. This endowed scholarship is awarded to foreign students who are named endowed scholars.
