Master of Arts in Teaching Program - Make a Difference in the Classroom 

Have you always wanted to teach? Get your Master's degree and initial teaching license at the same time with Otterbein's unique graduate-level Master of Arts in Teaching program.

 Program Highlights:

Master of Arts in Teaching programs offered in Middle Childhood grades 4-9 and Intervention Specialist grades K-12.

Middle Childhood grades 4-9: Students interested in the Middle Childhood program select two teaching/content areas from Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Intervention Specialist grades K-12: Students enrolled in the Intervention Specialist program can earn one or both licenses: K-12 Mild-to-Moderate or K-12 Moderate-to-Intensive.

Class Scheduling

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed to be a part-time program with some coursework offered in the evenings or in a blended format. A transcript evaluation will be completed for each student and an individualized schedule will be created.

The culmination of the program requires a full-time internship and student teaching semester in the schools. Most students complete the MAT program in two to three years, depending on the number of hours they have to complete for licensure.

Obtaining a Teaching License with the MAT Program

The MAT program provides the opportunity to get your Master’s degree and a teaching license for the State of Ohio. Students can complete an Ohio four-year Resident Educator Middle Childhood License for grades 4-9 or a K-12 Intervention Specialist license. Additional coursework may be required for the K-12 Intervention Specialist license in order to be considered Highly Qualified in some subjects.


All applicants to the Otterbein Master of Arts in Teaching go through a provisional admission process before enrolling and completing necessary requirements for full admission to the program.

Provisional Admission:

Students in the MAT program may take up to 10 graduate hours and an unlimited number of undergraduate hours while completing the steps to gain full admission to the MAT program. To apply for provisional admission:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Submit $40 application fee (waived for Otterbein alumni, veterans, and active duty military).
  3. Submit official transcripts from all previous institutions.
  4. Interview with education advisor. 
  5. A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate course work is required to be accepted into the MAT program.

Full Admission:

In addition to the steps listed under Provisional Admission:

  • Submit qualifying standardized test scores Options include GRE, SAT, ACT and Praxis Core.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation: Related to teaching success and/or qualifications to pursue graduate studies in education.
  • Participate in On-Campus Essay Writing, Interview Event
  • Documentation of 25 field hours working with students grades 4-9 (only required for MAT- Middle Childhood)
