Darcy Baxter '08

Darcy Baxter

Degrees: Bachelor of Arts degree in Sport Management and a minor in Public Relations.

What he's doing now: While at Otterbein, I worked three years at the Westerville Community Center as an assistant to the Recreation Manager. After graduation, I was offered the Program Supervisor position which I hold today.

My position requires me to work with the youth and teens in the community by offering them camps, classes and special events. One of my busiest times of the year is during the summer where we register over 300 campers with a staffing of 40 counselors for 8 weeks.

Throughout the rest of the year we offer a variety of classes that range from cooking classes, to pumpkin carving to archery. Some of the special events that I coordinate are four teen nights a year, a haunted trail and I am the Parks and Recreation representative in the city's 4th of July Parade.

I am also the supervisor of our new Teen Commission that we are starting here in the community. Our group is lead by a middle school aged kids who volunteer their time in the surrounding area while also enjoying the general socialization that is created through this committee.

My title also requires me to manage our Adaptive Needs group throughout the fall, winter, and spring. This is always a special time for me to see them smiling and laughing and always enjoying a good time at our events.

About his Otterbein experience: I am grateful for the time and opportunities that Otterbein allowed me, and I also owe a huge 'thank you' to the professors in the Health and Sports Sciences and the Communications Department. Without them, I would not be in the position I am in today.

Darcy's Advice: To offer some advice to those who are pursing or interested in a degree in Sport Management; it comes down to one's quality of a network and their internships. The more people you can have as a contact will benefit you in the long run.

Sport Management has many branches in which a graduate can purse - have a goal but don't be afraid to use a branch to reach that goal.
