Joy Kiger Joy Kiger

Joy has been in her current position at Otterbein since fall of 1997. She has been active in the development of curriculum and the NASPE/NCATE endorsement of the Physical Education Teacher Education program.

A 1967 graduate of Otterbein College (B.S. in Ed.), Joy has received a Masters in Education (Physical Education) from Miami University (Ohio) in 1973, a Masters of Science in Education (Outdoor Teacher Education) from Northern Illinois University in 1982, and a Ph.D. in Physical Education and Exercise Science with emphasis in Motor Development in 1987. Her public and private school physical education teaching experience includes one year at McGuffey Lab School at Miami University (Ohio), two years in Mansfield, Ohio (grades 4-9) and seven years in Englewood Ohio (grades K-6). Additionally she taught one year in outdoor education at the Lorado Taft Field Campus of Northern Illinois University (grades 4-college) and high school/college level physical education credit courses during the summer for Girl Scout National Center West (Wyoming).

Involved in Girl Scouting since her days as a Brownie, Joy has enjoyed summer camp work as unit/waterfront staff to program/administrative positions in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. She also spent two years as a district adviser and camp director for the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex County, N.J. The highlights of her scouting days were the summers at National Center West, Ten Sleep, Wyoming where she worked Wyoming Trek, Saddle Straddle, and as Back Country Coordinator.

Through out her career she has participated in state physical education organizations (Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin) and AAHPERD national conventions. She has also trained with Education Through Movement: Building The Foundation program (High/Scope Educational Research Foundation).

Joy feels her most rewarding work has been in the Physical Education Teacher Education field. This work has taken her through teaching assistantships at Michigan State University (4 years) to faculty positions at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (4 years), The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (7 years) and finally back to Otterbein College. Helping college freshmen grow in to young health and physical education professionals - priceless!
