Joan Rocks
Joan Rocks, PhD, ATC/L primarily teaches athletic training related courses in the nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program. She holds a doctorate degree in Higher Education and Leadership and is a practicing Certified Athletic Trainer.
Joan has been employed by Otterbein since 1992 and since has seen the significant growth and expansion in not only the athletic training program but the entire Health and Sport Sciences (HSS) Department. She is currently the chair of the department, in which four of the six majors are nationally accredited (Athletic Training, Health Education, Physical Education and Sport Management). The HSS Department hopes to continue its growth process through the recent addition of its newest major, Allied Health. This major is designed as a pre-graduate school major for those interested in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Exercise Science, Cardiac Rehabilitation, etc.
Joan is a graduate of Marietta College where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine which was then followed by graduate work at Canisius College where she was the athletic training graduate assistant. She completed her PhD work at the University of Toledo in Higher Education and Leadership with a minor in Educational Psychology.
Joan is also involved at the professional level by serving as the State Meeting Planner for the Ohio Athletic Trainer's Association (OATA) Annual Symposium as well as serving on the Athletic Training Student Committee, College Athletic Trainer Committee and the Sponsorship Committee for the OATA. She was the 2006 inaugural recipient of the Linda Weber Daniel Outstanding Mentor Award and the 2004 recipient of the Ohio Athletic Trainer of the Year Award (college division).
She is an avid gardener, loves to read and enjoys most outdoor activities - especially golf and anything on the water.
