Hallie RubinsDegrees: Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management and Business

What she’s doing now: After I graduated Otterbein I took a job with Life Center Plus, a health and fitness club in Hudson, Ohio, as a Sales Associate.

Some of my responsibilities include showing prospective members around our facility, spend time prospecting (handing out flyers/passes) to businesses in the area, generating new leads (prospects), and acquiring new corporate memberships.

One of the great things about my job is that I am not limited to only working in sales. I have the opportunity to work in the kids department and the fitness department when they need help. I love that I am able to have my hand into a couple of different things at once. It gives me the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in a few different areas.

The best part of my job is the people I met every single day. I enjoy talking to and meeting new people and my job lets me do this everyday. I see and talk with almost all the people I have signed up since I have been working at the club and I have made great friends.

Her Otterbein experience: The professors I had were a tremendous part of my total experience at Otterbein. Without their help and knowledge I would not be where I am today and have the skills needed to continue in the sports management field. My professors were there every step of the way through my four years no matter the situation. Their expertise, knowledge, and experiences were a large part of helping me decide what I want to do not as a job, but as a career. I am thankful for the opportunities and experiences I had while attending Otterbein and being a part of the Health and Sports Sciences Department.

Hallie’s advice: You’re most likely not going to land that dream job as soon as you graduate. Don’t be afraid to take a job that will lead as a stepping stone to what you truly want to do. You are able to gain experience and learn new things which will help you in the long run when you apply for that dream job.

Also, don’t be afraid to network with old friends or business colleagues-even if they are not in your field. They may know someone, or their friend may know someone, who has something open in their company. But remember: your network can only do so much-you have to take the initiative to work on finding jobs on your own.
