"I have grown as an individual through the Health and Sport Sciences Department. I have had the opportunity to go to statewide student leadership retreats and to be in many leadership roles. Through the department I have been given opportunities to do valuable networking, as well as make lifelong friends with my peers."

In the increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking applicants who are able to demonstrate the skills, abilities and knowledge that they possess which qualifies them for the job. For this reason the Department of Health and Sport Science requires all majors to compile an electronic portfolio.

What is an Electronic Portfolio?
In essence, an electronic portfolio is collection of personal and professional materials that demonstrate your professional development, how you perform and excel in the classroom, showcases your accomplishments in college, correlates your course work to the "real world", and demonstrates your mastery of competencies related to your major.

How can an Electronic Portfolio be a valuable tool?
It puts focus on student learning actual skills and keeps them competitive with others colleges in terms of technology skills; increases exposure to technology and gives students an awareness of what they have accomplished and a chance to promote themselves. It consolidates the documentation in one place which is easily accessible and secure in the student’s home folder. Research shows that interaction with students by faculty/staff enhances student learning.

Where do I start?
Your portfolio is a collection of your class assignments and is compiled while you complete your degree requirements at Otterbein. It is due for completion during student teaching or your internship.

Portfolios are set up during your freshman year at Otterbein. Each student makes an appointment with an academic support staff member (initial visit will take approximately 15 minutes) during which time the student gets orientation to department’s professional expectations and review of how to access their home folder, email and Banner. The student receives a checklist by major of class and related items that are to go into electronic portfolio and then the student must take the initiative to develop the portfolio by the end of their senior year.
