Here is a quick guide to some of the more popular search engines on the web.

Engine	Description
	Get answers from the experts. About uses subject matter experts to answer your questions and to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, the site is plagued with those annoying pop-up and pop-under advertisements.

	AllTheWeb is a genuine search engine from FAST, a Norwegian company specializing in intuitive and meaningful searching. One of the best search engines on the Internet.

	An early darling of Internet users, AltaVista does a good job despite the clutter of advertisements. Searches text, images, audio, video and even current news. Also includes an index of information.

	Looking for something? Ask Ask to find it for you. (Alas, someone seems to have killed off Jeeves the butler.) This search tool does an adequate job, however it is easily confused. The question Are there any car plants in Ohio? returned with links to pages on agriculture, gardening and spiders before listing automobile manufacturers. Other times it does a great job. The question "How do I apply to Otterbein College?" resulted in a link right to the school's application page. Bottom line: Make your question as clear and as unambiguous as possible.

	A meta-search service (it searches other search engines), DogPile performs some pretty good searching. Kudos to DogPile for ridding itself of all those advertisements.

	Perhaps the best search engine on the Internet, Google is fast, unbiased and uncluttered (no banner ads). Moreover, its search algorithms do a better job of separating the wheat from the chaff, ensuring that you are presented with meaningful results. Searches text, images, news groups and even current news. In a partnership with Yahoo!, Google now features an index of information.

	A search and index service, LookSmart is mired down in advertisements.

	A search and index service powered by FAST (see All the Web above). Lycos is a nice service, despite the clutter of advertisements.

	Northern Light is a good search engine that appears to be powered by the AltaVista engine.

	Despite the clutter of advertisements, the index service remains Yahoo's greatest value.
