Office 2007 File Formats
Office 2007 uses new file formats for its Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
The Bad News: These new file formats are not compatible with older versions of Office.
The Good News: There are converters that enable older versions of Office to open and save in these new file formats!
ITS has installed these converters on all lab, classroom, faculty and staff computers on campus. If you're a faculty member or staff, you don't need to do a thing. (We have done all of the heavy lifting for you!)
If you would like to install the converters on your personal computer, you can download them from the Microsoft Office
Compatibility Pack web page.
Note: There are currently no converters for the Mac system Office 2004. Office 2008 for the Mac has the conversion capability built in and is now available. There is no word on whether there will be converters for older versions of Office for the Mac.
