Troubleshooting
Guide: Computer Will Not Start
Try to turn the computer on again. In most cases,
this corrects the problem. If the computer is on and
it won't turn off, press and hold the On power button
for 6-8 seconds.
Check to see if the hard drive light is lit up on
the computer. Find the hard drive LED indicator (light)
on the front of your computer and see if is flashing.
If the hard drive LED is on or flashes, check the
monitor to see if it is turned on. Also, make sure
the monitor's power cord is plugged in; be sure to
look at the back of the monitor and make sure the power
cord is connected there as well.
Is your power strip working? Plug a lamp into it to
make sure the power strip is providing poser to all
outlets. Check the power strip's switch. If it has
a circuit breaker (most power strips do), reset the
circuit breaker.
Is your computer's fan working? Listen carefully to
your computer. If you can hear the cooling fan, your
computer is on.
Next, make sure the monitor settings are correct.
(Monitor may be dark if brightness is off or it is
set to hibernate) Is there an LED light on the front
of the monitor. If the LED indicator is green, that
means you have power connected to your computer. If
the LED is yellow, that means your monitor has power,
but it is not receiving any signal from the computer.
If this is the case, make sure the multi-pin monitor
connecting cable is securely fastened.
If there was a storm recently and your monitor stopped
working - it could be a static buildup. Unplug the
monitor for several hours and try it later. This sometimes
helps the static to discharge.
If your computer and monitor have power but the operating
system won't start correctly, make sure you don't have
a floppy diskette in your floppy drive.
If your computer appears to be starting and then stalls,
turn it off. Press F8 during the start-up process.
You will see a menu of start-up options. Select Safe
Mode. Let your computer start up. Once it has finished
starting in the Safe Mode, shut down the computer.
Wait 30 seconds and then start it up again. This usually
corrects any operating system problems.
