Important
Connection Notice from Information Technology
For Incoming Resident Students
To connect to the residence network, your computer should
meet or exceed the minimum hardware
and software standards.

You must also provide your own Ethernet cable.
(also called a network patch cord) These can be purchased
from the campus bookstore or any computer store.
Get a long patch cord for your room to make sure you
have enough length as needed, but a 10' or 15' cable
works in most residence hall rooms. We will provide
splitters or a hub if more than 2 roommates share a
single wall port.
The picture on the right shows the plug
on an Ethernet cable. (Get a Cat5 or better) Please
don't confuse Cat5 cables with telephone cables: Cat5
cables use an 8-pin connector while phone cables use
a smaller 4-pin connector. |
Wired routers, wireless routers and wireless
access points are not allowed on the Otterbein network. If
you set one up, you are violating the Acceptable Use Policy
and may face Judicial Council.
Important Message for Windows Users
The minimum Windows operating system allowed on the network
will be Windows XP or newer. Any older versions of Windows
will be denied access to the network due to falling out of
Microsoft support.
Macintosh Users
Macintosh computers can connect to the residence network
and access the same resources as Windows computers.
Windows Updates
Before connecting to the Otterbein network, Windows users
should make sure the windows updates are current (this closes
any vulnerabilities). Windows Updates are found at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
For instructions on how to run and configure Windows Updates
to download automatically, click
here.
Shared Drives & Folders
You must also disable any shared drives or folders on your
computer.
Virus Protection and Spyware Remover:
If you have your own virus protection, make sure its subscription
is current and virus definitions are updated. If it is a trial
version or expired subscription, you may remove it and take
our free version of McAfee at registration to the wired residence
hall network.
The same goes for a spyware remover. Make sure you have one
installed and its definitions are current. If you do not have
one, you may download for free Spybot Search and Destroy at
registration.
Visit these web pages to look into options for virus protection
and spyware removers if you want to prepare your machine prior
to arrival. click

How do I get connected in my room?
- Plug Ethernet Cord into wall port or splitter, if split
- Open up your Internet Browser (e.g. Internet Explorer,
Firefox, etc..)
- A default page will appear from Bradford Campus Manager
to register your computer.
- Know your username and password to the network. (Your
Network Account must be activated. If not activated yet,
you must go to a lab machine and go to www.otterbein.edu/newuser.
You will need to know your OID, Otterbein ID 8-digit number,
to activate your account.) (Hint: Find your OID on Cardinal
Web for Student or printed on your Cardinal card)
- To gain access to the residence network, all Windows
machines must have one current virus protection, Windows
updated and at least one installed Spyware remover. If your
machine does not meet the 3 criteria, you will receive a
message on what to fix and instructions. Macintoshes only
need to register the user – no spyware or virus protection
required!
- Download and install the FREE McAfee virus protection
if you do not have virus protection on your machine. Your
machine may have come with virus protection if it was a
new purchase, but this is a trial subscription and will
expire and you will be unprotected. Consider uninstalling
it and using our free McAfee. IMPORTANT: Remove ANY virus
protection first before installing McAfee or your machine
could become corrupt and will need fixed! Having more than
one virus protection program installed causes corruption.
To remove old virus software, go to the Control Panel, and
then Add/Remove Programs. Remove all products that are virus
protection.
- If you do not have spyware protection, install and run
the Spyware program offered at computer registration. After
installed, you should run the Spyware remover weekly. Remember
to download updates prior to running a scan on your machine.
Spyware will cripple your machine and can cause loss of
Internet Connectivity if it is not managed. This is your
responsibility to maintain and prevent this problem!
- Machines with Windows Vista have Defender already installed
(spyware remover), so no need to install the spyware remover
offered at registration.
Call Student the Student Help Desk at 823-1060 with problems
or questions!!
(Located in the Roush 015A basement lab)
If you registered and forgot (or were unable) to install
the Residence Hall utilities (which includes free McAfee anti-virus
service), click
