Courses Taught:

At Otterbein, I teach Introductory Biology III (Animals and Ecology), Field Biology, Ecology, Environmental Biology and Invertebrate Zoology. I also serve as advisor for students doing Independent Research in the field of ecology and Internships with environmental firms, state and federal agencies, and non-profit corporations. I am interested in Malacology, Ecology and Field Biology. My training is in Systematics and I am a specialist on the life history and ecology of mussels in the family Unionidae.

Research:

I am an aquatic ecologist. My research deals with the abundance and distribution of aquatic animals, especially mussels and fish, but my interests encompass all aquatic animals and the biological assessment methods developed to assess water resource integrity based on these animals, such as the Index of Biotic Integrity, the Invertebrate Community Index, etc. My students and I work on projects as varied as the development of a Mussel Index of Biotic Integrity, Muskrat predation on mussels, and an assessment of electroshocking and seining methods in regards to fish diversity assessment.
