Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences!
We offer programs of study in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Actuarial Science. Many of our mathematics majors pursue licensure to teach secondary mathematics. We also offer minors in mathematics and computer science.
Our Bachelor of Arts program in Computer Science is available to Continuing Studies students who wish to pursue their degree at night while working during the day.
Our commitment to teaching is fivefold:
- To prepare our majors for careers in their field;
- To prepare our majors for advanced study;
- To prepare students for high school teaching in mathematics;
- To offer supporting courses for majors in other departments; and
- To offer remedial education in mathematics.
Our mission is to promote an environment of intellectual growth as a catalyst to develop certain habits of mind for students and faculty, including attention to rigorous thinking, analytic and synthesizing skills, problem-solving processes and techniques, and creativity for adaptation to evolving disciplines.
To this end, we strive to:
- motivate and stimulate interest in the mathematical sciences for majors and non-majors,
- assist all students to understand the value in and the applications of the mathematical sciences,
- provide an adequate blend of theory and methodology,
- prepare students to deal with change by helping them to learn how to learn, and
- support continued professional growth of faculty.
