Choral Activities

The choral and vocal program at Otterbein has a long and distinguished tradition. Benjamin Hanby, composter of "Up on the Housetop" and the abolitionist ballad "Darling Nelly Gray," was a vocal student and ensemble leader at Otterbein in the 1850s. 2008 marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Otterbein choirs.
We have six vocal ensemble opportunities that are open to all members of the Otterbein community. Students must audition for choral placement.
Each year, members of the combined choirs perform great choral masterworks in conjunction with the Westerville Symphony and other regional orchestras. The Otterbein choirs have performed frequently with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and appear regularly at professional conferences of the Ohio Music Education Association and the American Choral Directors Assocation.
In addition to the ensembles listed, the Department also sponsors two student-led ensembles: "Six in the City," a women's pop ensemble; and "The Ottermen," a barbershop quartet. In addition, the Office of Student Affairs sponsors a gospel choir.
