Students examine the structure of graphite using an STM

Students in the Integrative Studies class The Atom (INST 240) examine the structure of graphite using a scanning tunneling microscope

May 2006 - The scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs) were used for the first time in the Integrative Studies course The Atom(INST 240) in Spring 2006. Every student had the chance to work hands-on with the Nanosurf STM systems to create atomic-scale images of graphite.

Some of the images they obtained are shown in the figures below.
