This 2 credit hour nursing elective course is an option for senior level nursing students. Course work is completed on line during the beginning of summer quarter, and a 4 day mission trip is taken in late August.
The team of approximately 8 students and 4 nursing faulty travel to the heart of Appalachia to participate in the delivery of culturally sensitive health care to persons served by Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. Students are given experiences working directly with persons living in the hills of Appalachia. Opportunities for students include making home visits, delivering needed health care services, providing health care teaching to school age children and senior citizens, and assisting with "meals on wheels" deliveries. In addition, service projects are completed at the mission, all while being members of the "work camp" at Red Bird.
