Department of Nursing Receives Grant
The Ohio Board of Nursing awarded the Otterbein Department of Nursing nearly $200,000 for its 2-year project, FLAME: Fostering Leaders, Advocates, Mentors and Educators, beginning in September 2009. The project helps prepare licensed nurses in the skill sets of nurse educator and clinical nurse leader through an innovative education/leadership program.

Otterbein will expand on current collaboration with Fairfield Medical Center to collaborate with the Department of Veteran Affairs Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center to prepare students through intension mentored education and leadership immersion experiences. Through the use of distance technology and an accelerated format, the FLAME model will be implemented with students to complete a combined Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Leader program leading to a Masters Degree in Nursing and a Nursing Education Certificate. These Master's prepared nurse leaders will be encouraged to remain in their communities to improve health care quality, promote advocacy and/or serve as educators or mentors of pre-licensure nursing students.

Professor Selected to Participate in National Human Genome Research Institute Workshop
Dr. Joan Pryor-McCann, Columbus resident (43206) and professor of nursing at Otterbein College, recently was selected from a competitive pool to participate in the National Human Genome Research Institute's 2009 Summer Workshop in Genomics, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and held at their health campus in Bethesda, Maryland, in August. As part of Dr. Pryor-McCann's selection, junior nursing major Lauren Shoemaker from Heath, OH, will accompany her for the weeklong workshop.

This intensive course is designed to update biology instructors, as well as other instructors and researchers in related disciplines, on genomic science. The course focuses on the continuing effort to find the genetic basis of various diseases and disorders, and current topics on the ethical, legal and social implications of genomics.

The Short Course faculty consists of leading NIH genomic researchers. The course features extended tours of working laboratories at the NIH, structured lectures, and highly interactive sessions.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) led the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) contribution to the International Human Genome Project, which had as its primary goal the sequencing of the human genome. This project was successfully completed in April 2003. Now, the NHGRI's mission has expanded to encompass a broad range of studies aimed at understanding the structure and function of the human genome and its role in health and disease. To that end, NHGRI supports the training of investigators and the dissemination of genome information to the public and to health professionals.

Nursing Faculty Participates in Press Conference About Senate Bill 89
Barbara Schaffner, nursing professor and department chairperson, and Holly Herron, a nursing faculty member, participated in a press conference this morning with Senator Sue Morano (only nurse in Ohio Assembly from the Lorain, Ohio area) related to Senate Bill 89. Senate Bill 89 provides more loan money to nurses interested in nursing education as a career. It also removes barriers for APNs from other states who have prescribing experience to come to Ohio without having to start at "square one" in obtaining prescriptive privileges.

Professor and Student Participate in Genomics Workshop
Dr. Joan Pryor-McCann was selected from a competitive pool to participate in the National Human Genome Research Institute's 2009 Summer Workshop in Genomics (sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and held at their health campus in Bethesda, Maryland) in August 2009. We are very pleased and proud for two members of our Department to have this wonderful opportunity.

Nurse Educator Concentration
The nursing profession is facing a shortage of nursing faculty, staff educators, and patient educators. Otterbein's graduate nurse educator concentration can help you become better prepared and more marketable within the health care arena.

The Advanced Practice Nurse Educator Concentration:

  • Prepares you to teach more effectively
  • Is a 3-course online sequence
  • Can be done as part of a master's program or as a post master's
  • Focuses on client/staff education or higher education nursing programs
  • Provides a Certificate of Completion
  • The practicum includes time with a practicing faculty member or health care institution based nurse educator.
Kelsy Beers Receives Honor
We are very proud of Kelsy Beers, a senior center fielder who was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team. She is also recognized as an All-America student-athlete. Kelsy is a senior nursing student who has been on the Otterbein Dean's List all 11 terms. She embodies excellence on the baseball field, in the classroom and encourages us to remember to have fun as well. Congratulations Kelsy!
