Offered during Summer Term only, the following courses are designed for currently licensed registered nurses, recent graduates of a BSN program who aspire to practice parish nursing. The concepts of health as wholeness within a faith tradition will be integrated into nursing practice. The role and scope of parish nursing practice will be discussed. Community, professional, and spiritual resources will be identified. Methods to be used are lecture, discussion, role playing, case presentation, and clinical field practice.
NURS 499/699 Introduction to Parish Nursing - 2 Qtr Hrs*
Participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate advanced nursing knowledge in health promotion; individual, family, and community health assessment; health counseling and teaching; promotion of individuals and groups with diverse ages, cultures, and lifestyles; and clinical and ethical decision-making in common situations encountered by parish nurses. A plan for beginning a new parish nurse practice or modifying a current practice will be developed.
NURS 499/699 Concepts and Practices of Parish Nursing - 3 Qtr Hrs*
This course builds on the knowledge and skill acquired in the previous course. Using recommended Standards of Parish Nurse Practice, the six roles of the parish nurse (health assessor, health educator, health promoter, health counselor, trainer of volunteers, and advocate) will be studied in depth. Students will demonstrate application of roles through oral and written presentation role playing and clinical practice. In addition, the advanced practice aspects of the parish nurse role, administrator and researcher will be discussed. Prerequisites: Currently licensed RN and completion of Introduction to Parish Nursing (or equivalent upon approval of instructor) or completion of one year of practice as a parish nurse with recommendation from the pastor or chairperson of the health committee.
