On May 8, 2009 the Otterbein College community will honor President C. Brent DeVore's 25 years of service to the College at a special tribute, "Reflections in Silver: Celebrating 25 Years of Engaged Leadership."
President DeVore has led Otterbein through a remarkable period of growth. During his tenure, Otterbein has doubled its enrollment to over 3,000 students and increased its endowment from $6 million to over $70 million. President DeVore's dedication to academic excellence at Otterbein has resulted in higher student retention rates, the attraction of highly-qualified faculty, and the implementation of graduate programs in education, nursing and business. Under his leadership, nearly $70 million has been invested in campus infrastructure, including a vibrant new Art and Communications facility, a new Center for Equine Studies, and a state-of-the-art renovation to the Science Center.
Otterbein's mission is to "educate the whole student with humane values." Perhaps the mission is best expressed through President DeVore's efforts to enhance the educational experience of each student. During my years at Otterbein, I saw President DeVore welcome new freshmen, chair the College Senate, speak in classrooms, attend concerts, art exhibitions and plays, help build a house during a student-led Community Plunge, play frisbee on Towers lawn, and, of course, cheer on our 2002 National Champion Cardinals men's basketball team. These actions are just a snapshot of the President's commitment to the lives of 25 years of Otterbein students.
Our tribute to President DeVore will include a reception, dinner, and auction. As a fundraiser, our goal is to secure financial support for an endowed fund "The Carl and Helen DeVore Memorial Humanitarian Award." Created by the President in honor of his parents, the award seeks to recognize commitment to community service by an Otterbein junior or senior. The award is an example of the President's ongoing desire to witness the engagement of the Otterbein community within our greater community - locally, regionally, nationally and globally.
Please join us at this tribute to honor President DeVore's 25 successful years. If you cannot attend, please consider honoring President DeVore with a contribution to the endowment for The Carl and Helen DeVore Memorial Humanitarian Award.
Sincerely,
J. Caleb Bell '04
