Personal Bio

I spent three summers working in archaeological field schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio during my undergraduate and anthropology graduate school years. Prior to coming to Otterbein, I was the Assistant Government Documents Librarian at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. I have worked as the cataloging librarian at the Courtright Memorial Library at Otterbein University since 1983. Besides my library duties, I also write book reviews on anthropology and archaeology books for Library Journal, one of the most respected library reviewing journals in the United States.

I have been involved since 1997 in helping the small public library on the island of Montserrat in the West Indies rebuild its library collection after the devastating volcanic eruptions on the island that began in 1995. Now there are two other small libraries on the island as well as the public library. Two small academic libraries were started in 2005. One is a library for the island’s branch campus of the University of the West Indies, and the other is a library for a small community college on the island.

I also help them occasionally. I answer cataloging questions by e-mail for all three libraries when needed.

During the summer of 2011, I went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China as an exchange librarian. It was very interesting to learn about academic libraries in China and their similarities to and differences from the library at Otterbein University. I spent two weeks traveling in China after the librarian exchange and saw many interesting places including the Great Wall, the terra cotta warriors in Xi’an, the Panda Breeding Research Centre in Chengdu, and the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River.

My hobbies include reading, playing the mountain dulcimer, gardening, hiking, and travel.
