UPDATED: September 14, 2015 with production photos.

Otterbein University Theatre opens its 2015-16 season with the musical, RENT, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24; 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27; and 8 p.m. on Sept. 25-26 and Oct. 1-3 in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St. Tickets cost $25. Call 614-823-1109 or visit www.otterbein.edu/dramaAdvisory: This production is recommended for mature audiences due to adult language and themes.

Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La BohèmeRENT follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village. The group’s dreams, losses and love stories weave through the musical’s narration to paint a stunningly raw and emotional portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.

The production is directed by Melissa Lusher, last known in the Columbus area for her direction of the Otterbein University Theatre and Dance and Music productions of The Greeks: The Murders and Spring Awakening (named one of the top 10 shows in 2012 by The Columbus Dispatch). Lusher is an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Otterbein, where she teaches speech, dialects and acting, and serves as the resident speech/dialects coach for all productions. She also regularly serves as a guest dialect coach at area universities and theater companies.

Tickets for RENT are $25 each and can be reserved by calling the Otterbein University box office at (614) 823-1109 or purchased online at www.otterbein.edu/drama. The box office is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to performances. The box office is located in Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St.
