Otterbein University and Brookdale Senior Living Solutions present Lifelong Learners Lectur

November 11, 2015
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University and Brookdale Senior Living Solutions will offer the Lifelong Learning Lecture, Age and Wisdom, with Otterbein Professor Noam Shpancer from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Marysville Early College High School, 833 N. Maple St., Marysville. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Wisdom is easily recognized but difficult to define and measure with precision. Is wisdom a function of intelligence? Personality? Age? Experience? Some say that wisdom requires much knowledge; others say it requires realizing how much you don’t know. Some argue wisdom is mainly clear thinking, while others claim it is primarily about appropriate action, or empathetic emotion. This talk will discuss several contemporary psychological theories of wisdom, along with some surprising research findings about the relationship between wisdom and age.

Dr. Shpancer was born and raised on an Israeli Kibbutz. He arrived in the United States in 1985.  He holds a doctorate from Purdue University and is currently a professor of psychology at Otterbein University. His specialty areas include clinical and developmental psychology. Shpancer's research interests center on various dimensions of the home-daycare link, including parent-caregiver relations, people’s attitudes and perceptions about child care, and children's adaptation across contexts. Shpancer teaches a variety of classes, including life span development, psychotherapy, and positive psychology. He is also a licensed, practicing clinical psychologist in private practice.

Preregistration for the lecture is not required but is appreciated, especially for large groups. Register online at https://lavonaform.wufoo.com/forms/lifelong-learners-lecturesregistration.
