Otterbein Music Presents Annual Spring Sing and Violin and Piano Duo Recital

Otterbein Department of Music to present Spring Sing

Otterbein University’s annual Spring Sing, a celebration of entertaining vocal styles, will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, in Riley Auditorium at the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St. The concert is free and open to the public.

Numerous vocal soloists and small groups will perform, as well as the pop a cappella ensemble Opus One, directed by Dr. Gayle Walker. The program will feature a mix of pop, musical theatre and jazz songs, including works by Billy Joel, the Pentatonix, the Beatles, Sia, and Amy Winehouse. Musical theatre songs from PippinFrozen and Whoop-dee-doo, as well as classic jazz standards by Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra will also be performed. The show will be directed by Otterbein faculty member Robert Bux and assisted by accompanist Joyce Stonebraker.

Otterbein to Host Violin and Piano Duo:  Bohdan Subchak and Maira Liliestedt

Violinist Bohdan Subchak and pianist Maira Liliestedt will perform a duo recital at Otterbein University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, in Riley Auditorium at the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program will include works for violin and piano by Bach, Prokofiev and Bolcom, as well as the famous “Kreutzer” Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 47 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Both performers are faculty members at the University of Mount Union

A native of Ukraine, Bohdan Subchak studied at the Kyiv School of Music and the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory of Music in Kyiv. He was a member of the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra, has played in many other orchestras and chamber ensembles in Ukraine, performing throughout the Soviet Union and in many countries such as Germany, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia, and Canada. He joined the string faculty at the University of Mount Union in 1999. An active performer, Subchak is a member of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and concert master in the Alliance Symphony Orchestra. He is also the first violinist in the Alliance String Quartet.

Currently an associate professor of music at the University of Mount Union, pianist Dr. Maira Liliestedt has piano degrees from Bowling Green State University and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. An active performer and teacher, and twice the recipient of the prestigious Presser Music Award, she is a regular solo and chamber pianist and concerto soloist. Her Appassionata Piano Duo with Janelle Phinney has garnered praise for “flawless, often fiery technique,” and “terrific collaboration full of grace and passion.” In 2015, Liliestedt presented solo recitals at many universities in the United States and Romania, as well as piano duo and solo concerto performances.
