Otterbein University String Orchestra to Perform Latin Music

March 30, 2016
Otterbein University

The Otterbein University String Orchestra, under the direction of Jim Bates, will go “south of the border” for their spring concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, as part of the Joyful Noise Concert Series at Grace Lutheran Church, located at 100 E. Schrock Road, Westerville. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 614.823.1508.

Heitor Villa-Lobos’s sumptuous String Quartet No. 1 as performed by the string orchestra will evoke the dance feel of Brazilian music blended with the harmonies of the jazz idiom. The program will also include the world premiere of Laborintos by Cuban composer José María Vitier, a visiting composer-in-residence at Otterbein in April.

African-American composer William Grant Still’s Panamanian Dances will provide another snapshot of the dance traditions of Central and South America, but dressed up for the concert hall. The program will also include gems by Piazzolla, Ginastera and Ponce. Artists from the Fred Astaire Studios will join the orchestra for a bit of tango to top off the program.

This program is presented as part of Otterbein University’s Opening Doors to the World initiative, focusing this semester on Cuba and South America. Learn more about the initiative and other performances in the series at www.otterbein.edu/openingdoors.
