Mezzo-soprano Olga Perez Flora, along with Otterbein faculty members and guest artists, will present an exciting Cuban song recital at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, in Riley Auditorium at the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St., Westerville.

The recital will begin with a brief lecture by Dr. Perez Flora, and the musical selections will feature the classical and popular genres of Cuban song, highlighting the nation’s indelible rhythms, instruments and characters. Pieces on the program will include Velorio by Ignacio Cervantes; Cinco canciones negras by Xavier Montsalvatge; and Siempre en mi corazón, Noche Azul, Siboney and the famous Malagueña by Ernesto Lecuona.

The recital will also feature two works, Creatura a fortunada and Habanera, by composer-in-residence José María Vitier.

Perez Flora will be assisted by Orlay Alonso, piano, James Flora, tenor, Chad Greenwald, bass, Tomasz Jarzecki, percussion, and Karl Wohlwend, guitar.

This concert, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Dr. Anahi M. Ortiz and Mr. William T. Conard, and is offered as part of Otterbein and the Arts: Opening Doors to the World, a multi-year initiative focusing on the arts in three non-Western regions: Latin America (2015-16), Asia (2016-17) and Africa (2017-18).
