Wind Ensemble to Perform Outdoor Concert

April 15, 2016
Otterbein University

The Otterbein University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Michael Yonchak, will present its final program of spring semester at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 25, on the lawn in front of the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St., Westerville. This program, Music on the Lawn, will present an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary literature that is well suited for outdoor spaces. The concert is free and open to the public.

Works by John Philip Sousa, Travis Weller, Johann Sebastian Bach, Charles Carter, and Samuel Hazo will be performed. Graduating senior music majors will also be recognized during a break in the performance.

Also featured will be the Otterbein Marimba Band. Under the direction of Dr. Jack Jenny, this ensemble was formed in the fall of 2011 as a subgroup of the Percussion Ensemble.  This elite group performs the indigenous music of Central America, where the marimba is almost a spiritual part of the culture, as well as orchestral transcriptions and contemporary music composed specifically for this instrumentation.  The Marimba Band represents an outreach for the university; it performs in various venues from high schools to retirement communities as well as for social events on campus.
