Otterbein Summer Theatre presents "Invention of Theater"

May 26, 2016
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—Otterbein Summer Theatre continues its 50th anniversary season with the premiere of the new work Invention of Theater at 7:30 p.m. on June 16; 2 p.m. on June 19 and June 24; and 8 p.m. on June 17-18 and June 23-25, ONSTAGE at the Fritsche Theatre at Roush Hall, 30 S. Grove St. Tickets cost $25. Call 614-823-1109 or visit www.otterbein.edu/drama.

Invention of Theater follows a small band of characters as they discover how to create a play from scratch. In a comedic send-up of everything from Shakespeare to Mamet, Invention is a play about why theater is such a vital (and strange) element of human nature.

Otterbein Theatre workshopped an earlier version during the 2014 Student Festival. Playwright Sean Murphy has since edited and expanded the script for a full-length production.

Murphy is a New York-based actor and writer, originally from Dallas, TX. His first play, The Starter, won the Fringe Favorite Award at the 2015 New York Fringe Festival. It was staged with an entirely Otterbein alumni cast and crew. Murphy is a graduate of Otterbein University, where he received his bachelor of fine arts degree in performance.

Tickets are $25 each and can be reserved by calling the Otterbein University box office at (614) 823-1109 or purchased online at www.otterbein.edu/drama. The box office is open 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to performances. The box office is located in Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St., Westerville. Student rush discounts are available one hour prior to curtain, pending ticket availability.
