Otterbein University Graduate Programs Begin Fall Semester with New Directors and Opportunities

October 03, 2016
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University welcomed graduate students in six master’s and one doctoral program for fall semester. Barbara Schaffner, Dean of the Graduate School and Professional Studies, said that graduate enrollment is holding steady when compared to last fall’s numbers. Schaffner noted that the graduate programs continue to thrive and grow as graduates impact their profession and communities. She cited two nursing programs, namely the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Nurse Anesthesia (NA) programs, as continuing to thrive with very competitive admissions. The NA program, which attracts a national pool of applicants, received more than 100 applicants for 20 available slots.

The Master of Science in Allied Health (MSAH) program is under the guidance of a new graduate program director, Paul Longenecker. He has 25 years experience in management and leadership roles in the healthcare industry and in higher education. He explains the success of Otterbein’s program is due to graduates’ success. “The MSAH program is starting its fifth year and its success has exceeded our expectations. Recent examples of career paths for graduates have included: business project manager for oncology (OhioHealth Grant Medical Center); clinical athletic trainer (Nationwide Children’s Hospital); corporate wellness support coordinator (YWCA of Central Ohio); registered dietician nutritionist; physical therapy doctoral program; and many positions as varsity and assistant athletic coaches (universities and high schools). We have really strived to customize the graduate experience to meet each student’s unique goals and focus.”

Lauren Keller will work as a graduate assistant in the MSAH program while she’s earning her graduate degree in the exercise and health sciences track. She is a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor, working with Healthfitness as a corporate fitness center program manager for the last five years. “I came to Otterbein because the program was a perfect fit for everything I wanted to learn in my graduate studies,” she said.

K. Daniel Cho, Ph.D., has taken on the role of graduate education program director this year. The Education Department has a strong connection with teaching professionals through teacher associations such as the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio and continues to offer professional development. In addition, the department has garnered connections with specific school districts such as Olentangy and Canal Winchester to offer experiential professional development courses.

Master of Business Administration Director Eric Lloyd expects continued growth in the program with the addition of Sarah Shumick in the role of senior assistant director of graduate recruitment. Shumick was formerly assistant director for graduate admissions at Ohio Dominican University. Along with Lloyd, she plans to be active in the Columbus corporate community, particularly with young professional groups, to bring visibility and access to the multi-faceted benefits of having an Otterbein MBA.

Lloyd looks forward to welcoming MBA students in January at the Marysville Early College High School Innovation Center. The MBA program is accepting applications now for the spring 2017 and fall 2017 semesters. He has fostered relationships with industries in Union County and emphasizes there are significant tuition reductions for community and business partnerships.
