Conference will feature artists-in-residence, Transient Canvas.

Westerville, OH – Otterbein University’s Department of Music will host a Snapshot Conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI), featuring artists-in-residence, Transient Canvas, on Nov. 4 and 5.

A Snapshot Conference is a micro-conferences between composition departments at neighboring schools, which provides recital and performance opportunities, score exchanges and networking between performers and peer composers. Participants in the conference are members of local student chapters of SCI from Otterbein, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Cedarville University and Heidelberg University.

The purpose of the conference is to engage the community in recently composed contemporary music from the central Ohio area and beyond. Events include presentations, masterclasses, a composer reading session and three recitals, which are free and open to the public. All recitals will take place in Riley Auditorium at the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St.

Praised by the Boston Globe as “superb,” Transient Canvas — featuring Amy Advocat, bass clarinet, and Matt Sharrock, marimba — has been blazing its own trail in the world of contemporary music since 2011. They have premiered more than 60 new works, essentially creating an entirely new repertoire for their unique instrumentation. They perform almost exclusively works written for them, and they actively seek out new composers to stretch their instrumentation to its limits. At Otterbein, they will work with Otterbein student performers, workshop pieces written by Snapshot Conference participants, and hold a public recital on Friday evening. Their residence is made possible by the generous support of the Johnstone Fund for New Music.

Public events are as follows:

Friday, Nov. 4
8 p.m. - Transient Canvas concert

Saturday, Nov. 5
2 p.m. - Student Composers concert
8 p.m. - Red Noise (Otterbein’s New Music Ensemble) and Student Composers concert
