Otterbein Percussion Ensemble to Hold Fall Concert

November 01, 2016
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University Percussion Ensemble presents its fall concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Riley Auditorium at the Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert opens with Nathan Daughtrey’s Fidget, a work that is balanced in its orchestration but highly unbalanced in its “twitchy/fidgety/stuttering” syncopation. The concert continues with a very colorful scoring of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Harold Farberman’s adaptation of this popular baroque violin trio substitutes untuned percussion for its 18th century counterpoint. More music of yore is captured in Jason Baker’s Old Tyme Muster, inspired by the American fife and drum tradition.  The Otterbein Marimba Band is next featured in Mark Ford’s quirky gimmick, Afta-Stube! which approaches the art of marimba playing from all angles. That particular moment in one’s life “when there is a realization of one’s mortality and a force bigger than humankind” is captured next in David Gillingham’s Point of Reckoning, inspired by the John Wesley hymn “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and beautifully scored by Nathan Daughtrey.  Finally, inspired by the exotic rhythms of both East and West Africa, the concert concludes with Phil Faini’s classic work for percussion, Afro-Amero.

The Otterbein Percussion Ensemble is comprised of student percussionists Xavier Coppel, Matthew Cross, Garrett Lind, Brodie Ranzau, Ethan Robert, Seth Sprang and Hannah Wickizer and is directed by faculty member Jack Jenny.
