Otterbein University Concert Choir to Perform on Tour of Southeastern U.S.

January 26, 2017
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University Concert Choir from Westerville, Ohio, will perform in the southeastern United States from Feb. 24-March 3 for the Choir’s annual performance tour. Conducted by Dr. Gayle Walker, the choir will perform seven concerts on the tour, including performances in Norwood, VA; Charlotte, NC; Beaufort, SC; Bluffton, SC; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; and Westerville, OH. All performances are free and open to the public.

The choir will perform the local premieres of a newly commissioned work, Please Stay, by Jake Runestad. The piece is based on a poem offering encouragement and understanding to those suffering from depression and who are without hope. The choir will also perform contemporary pieces from Central Asia, including traditional folk songs and works celebrating Mongolian horses, the beauty of the Himalayas, and the excitement of Bollywood. In addition, the choir will perform masterworks by Scarlatti and Britten, and works by Kim Andréson and Stacey Gibbs.

For their final concert at the Church of the Messiah in Westerville, the Concert Choir will be joined by the Symphonic Choir and Vocal Ensemble from Washington High School, directed by Otterbein alumnus Jared Joseph.

The Concert Choir is the most select of Otterbein University’s vocal ensembles. The choir tours annually to destinations both domestic and abroad. Recent itineraries have included Boston, Ireland, Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and China.  The choir has performed at prestigious locations such as the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, The Beijing Conservatory of Music, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and St. Nicholas Church in Prague. The ensemble has frequently performed at professional conferences, including conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the Ohio Music Educators Association.
