January 26, 2017
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University String Orchestra will present “Dance, Sing, Play, the Baroque Way” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Grace Lutheran Church, 100 E. Schrock Rd. This event is free and open to the public.

The upcoming concert by Otterbein’s string orchestra represents some of the best music of the Baroque era. Each of the works on the program is a suite of movements. The Fencing School of Johann Heinrich Schmelzer is a suite of pieces which he composed as a ballet and includes a musical depiction of a duel. Georg Philipp Telemann created an imaginative orchestral suite of pieces which musically illustrate the adventures of Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Gallop along on Rosinante as the knight dreams of his beloved princess and does battle with windmills. Matthew Locke’s The Tempest was composed as incidental music for Shakespeare’s play. The piece concludes with a stormy voyage on the sea. Finally, the orchestra performs a suite of pieces from Handel’s opera Alcina. In addition to the instrumental movements, Otterbein vocal student Grace Samson will be featured in the aria “Torna mia vagghrggiar.” Performing with the orchestra will be members of Columbus’ early music ensemble, The Early Interval, playing recorder and theorbo. This collection of Baroque music for dancing, singing and playing is sure to delight.
