Otterbein University Theatre and Dance Presents Dance 2017: “Move Me”

November 08, 2017
Otterbein University

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual dance concert, Dance 2017: “Move Me,” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16; 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St. Tickets are $22. Call 614-823-1109 or visit www.otterbein.edu/drama for tickets or more information about the Otterbein University Theatre season.

The concert, which has been conceived and choreographed by Otterbein University faculty and one student specially selected for the concert, explores the connections of humanity.

“It is the human experience to be intellectually, emotionally and physically moved, gently or with bone jarring impact, and often when least expected,” Stella Hiatt Kane, artistic director and choreographer, explained as she described her vision for the concert. “It is also the human experience to connect with the complete stranger or unfamiliar landscape and feel as if every recall of detail is complete and quite natural.”

The concert will illustrate this connection of the human experience through many forms of contemporary dance including modern, jazz, tap and classical styles.

Kane, a Westerville resident, has been a member of the Otterbein faculty since 1989 and director of dance since 1996; a member of the BalletMet Academy faculty; and the founding artistic director of JazzMet. She has been a member of the national companies of “Sugar” and Bob Fosse’s “Dancin’” and a member of the national and international companies of “The American Dance Machine.”

New to the concert this year are Otterbein faculty choreographers Anna Elliott and Christeen Stridsberg.

Elliott, a Westerville native, joined the Radio City Rockettes at the age of 18. After an eight-year run with the group, which included performances on the Today Show, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting, and The Rachel Ray Show, Elliott became part of the first national tour of “42nd Street.” She now teaches tap, ballet, jazz and musical theatre dance at Otterbein and choreographs for the Westerville Civic Theater.

Stridsberg was born and raised in Columbus and is an alumna of Otterbein University and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Master of Fine Arts program in dance performance and choreography. She has performed globally in Japan, Russia, South Korea, and on the high seas and has choreographed for Weathervane Playhouse, Gallery Players, and the Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival. Stridsberg currently teaches gender and performance studies, kinesiology, and dance history and technique at both Otterbein University and Wittenberg University.

Tickets can be reserved by calling the Otterbein University box office at (614) 823-1109 or online at www.otterbein.edu/drama. The box office is open 12-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to performances. The box office is located in Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St., Westerville.
