State of the State to be held at Otterbein

March 06, 2018
Otterbein University

Otterbein University is proud to host Ohio Governor John Kasich for his eighth and final State of the State address on Tuesday, March 6. He will deliver the address at a formal joint session of the 132nd General Assembly at 7 p.m. in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 27 S. Grove Street, Westerville.

Officials from Otterbein, the City of Westerville, Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce, Westerville City Schools, Westerville Public Library, and other local organizations and businesses have worked with the Governor’s Office to plan this special welcome home for Kasich, a local resident.

This formal joint session of the legislature will be attended by legislators, statewide and local elected officials, members of the Governor’s Cabinet, guests and members of the public from throughout Ohio who received tickets through the ticket lottery.

Members of the public without tickets can view the address online or at a viewing party at Otterbein’s Campus Center, 100 W. Home Street, Westerville. The address will be streamed live online at www.ohiochannel.org/live/governor-john-kasich.

Kasich was sworn in as Ohio’s 69th governor on Jan. 10, 2011, and re-elected to a second four-year term in 2014.

As governor, Kasich’s top priority is to create a jobs-friendly climate to increase opportunity for all Ohioans. By closing an $8 billion budget shortfall without a tax increase, reducing taxes by $5 billion, cutting wasteful spending and eliminating red tape, Ohio jobs have grown by nearly 500,000 and the Buckeye State is in a stronger position than it was when Kasich took office.

Otterbein is making a local impact on job creation with The Point, an economic driver and collaborative partnership with business and industry, the City of Westerville and the State of Ohio. The Point has re-defined the future of higher education as students, faculty and partners integrate the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) fields with an experiential, hands-on learning environment. The collaboration will drive economic growth for the region through business development and job creation, while providing student experiences through internships, capstone projects and research initiatives. This one-of-a-kind concept has been identified as a model of the 21st century education.

A feasibility study commissioned from Boyette Strategic Advisors estimates the direct impact of the The Point will result in the creation of 200 jobs in its first five years, totaling $16 million in payroll. The state and local tax impact over five years is projected at $3.6 million.

Otterbein also is honored to welcome a variety of state agencies and participants to campus in conjunction with the State of the State address.
