Otterbein University Concert Choir Tours in March

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University Concert Choir will tour Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio from March 9-24. All performances are free and open to the public. For more information, call (614) 823-1504.

The program will include works by Sweelinck, Orbán, Casals, and Wilburg, as well as arrangements of gospel and Haitian folk songs. The tour will include performances in Bethel Park (Pittsburgh), Penn.; Strasburg, Penn.; Harrisburg, Penn.; Chelsea, Mich.; Zanesville, Ohio; Smithville, Ohio and Westerville, Ohio.

The Concert Choir is the most select of the Otterbein University’s seven vocal ensembles. The majority of its 50 members are Music majors who study voice privately. The Concert Choir tours annually to destinations both domestic and abroad. Recent itineraries have included China in 2010; Charleston, SC in 2009; Chicago in 2008; Toronto in 2007; France and Switzerland in 2006; and New York in 2005. The choir has performed at prestigious locations such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and St. Nicholas Church in Prague. The ensemble frequently performs at professional conferences, including the Central Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in 2008 and the Ohio Music Educators Association in 2007.

Conductor Gayle Walker is in her tenth year as Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Otterbein University. She conducts the Concert Choir and the Opus One vocal jazz ensemble, and teaches ear training, conducting and early music history. Prior to coming to Otterbein she taught choral and vocal music at Marietta College in Ohio. She has performed as a guest conductor and piano or vocal recitalist in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. She is also a skilled clinician and adjudicator, as well as a past President of the Ohio Choral Directors Association. A native of Iowa, Dr. Walker holds degrees from The University of Northern Colorado, The University of Colorado-Boulder and Macalester College.
