OTTERBEIN INCREASING INTERNATIONAL RECRUITING EFFORTS

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University is strengthening its commitment to attracting international students to the Westerville campus.  Alyssa Libby recently joined the Office of International Admission as Senior Assistant Director of International Recruitment.  She most recently served as the program coordinator for international admissions at The Ohio State University and has extensive student recruitment experience overseas. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, a master’s degree in elementary education from Loyola College in Maryland and a master’s degree in higher education administration and student personnel from Kent State University.

Libby will visit Europe, North and Central America and the Middle East in her travels this fall.  She hopes to strengthen Otterbein’s global recognition and provide a strong higher education option for students around the world.  Her efforts will internationalize campus by increasing enrollment in English as a Second Language (ESL), Otterbein Semester, undergraduate and graduate programs.

“Our strategic plan and university mission explicitly embrace the importance of education in creating an environment where our students learn to engage locally and globally,” said Miguel Martinez-Saenz, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We hope to help them discover themselves and their place in relation to the various interdependent social, cultural, historical, religious, scientific, political and economic contexts that constitute the world they inhabit. Then, as they prepare to make the move from Otterbein into a world of active, lifelong learning, we will have equipped them to respond in an informed, critical, socially engaged and civically aware way.”

The value of global experiences extends not only to incoming international students, but the entire campus community, Martinez-Saenzexplained. “As I think about the global education agenda and the potential for change, I keep in mind the role cross-national and cross-cultural conversations should take in a learning environment. To my mind, those conversations must be inclusive of all partners in our educational endeavors, including students, artists, business people, and our educators themselves.”

In addition to Libby, the admission office is expanded to include International Admissions Coordinator Jennifer Seymour, who specializes in immigration and cultural adjustment, and Coordinator of International Partnerships and Student Support Services Richard Ji, who specializes in building partnerships with international universities and providing cultural programming for current students.
